Tim Warfield | One For Shirley

A veteran of the groups of Nicholas Payton and Adonis Rose, saxophonist Tim Warfield breaks significantly from the format of his four previous Criss Cross sides. One For Shirley pays homage to the legendary organist Shirley Scott, with whom Warfield played on numerous occasions back in the early 90’s. Terell Stafford makes for a perfect front-line partner, the trumpeter obviously comfortable in the organ combo format thanks to his current work in Matt Wilson’s Arts and Crafts. Rising Organ star Pat Bianchi tips his hat to Scott, but does so in a way that proves he’s an individualist worthy of wider recognition. On drums the great Byron Landham, and Daniel G. Sadownick plays congas and percussion. – Amazon.com

Esther Phillips | Alone Again, Naturally

Esther Phillips

Esther Phillips

Recorded in late 1972, “Alone Again Naturally” was the follow-up to Esther Phillips’ Grammy ® nominated “From A Whisper To A Scream”.  Producer Creed Taylor assembled a stellar cast of musicians including George Benson, Maceo Parker, Eric Gale, Bernard Purdie, Ron Carter, Richard Tee and Billy Cobham.  A great choice of repertoire and superb arrangements from Pee Wee Ellis and Don Sebesky melded  perfectly with Esther’s smoky vocals to produce one of the finest albums of her career.  Both critics and NARAS voters took note, the latter awarding Ms. Phillips a second  Grammy ® nomination for this Kudu classic. – CDBaby.com

Unlimited Internet Use Under Attack

The promise of unlimited high-speed Internet access could become a thing of the past with more and more carriers putting limits on monthly downloads. The issue has become a hot one since Time Warner began a trial scheme in Texas limiting users to 5GB of downloads a month, charging penalty fees for any extra use.

It’s looking as if rival firms may feel they can get away with similar tactics. One firm, Frontier, is already planning to mirror the 5GB limit next year. What makes that particularly concerning for customers is that in Rochester, Frontier’s biggest market, the main alternative is Time Warner.

At the moment, Frontier says the majority of its customers use less than 1.5GB a month. However, it also revealed that average use is doubling each year, meaning that within a year of the cap coming into force, the majority of users could exceed it. There’s no word on whether the firm would gradually increase the limit to mirror demand. (Source: scrippsnews.com) – Infopackets.com

Mercator is the result of four journeyman jazz musicians’ willingness to allow seven newly penned compositions; never before performed or rehearsed, take them across a broad, emotional, sonic spectrum, without any imposed limitations.

Recorded in NYC on St. Patrick’s Day, 2008, the improvisational music included within Mercator has little to do with luck, and everything to do with musicality, patience and soulful virtuosity. – CDBaby.com

Which Internet Providers Are Watching You Surf The Internet?

Internet, Technology

It’s one of the first rules of Internet 101: visiting questionable websites leads to viruses, which entices hackers to access your hard drive and monitor your every click. But can someone still be monitoring your
web activity even if you’re extra careful when selecting online
destinations? The answer may just depend on which Internet provider you use.

A few months ago, The U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce sent
out an open letter to 33 companies inquiring about their online
targeting practices, or in other words, the extent to which the web
activity of their customers is being monitored.

Wayman Tisdale

Wayman Tisdale

Wayman Tisdale’s lengthy battle with cancer has taken another turn. The Oklahoma basketball legend had the lower part of his right leg amputated Monday.

Diagnosed early last year with cancer, he has been fighting it for the past 18 months. The surgery to remove the lower part of his leg is expected to eradicate the disease.

“I have complete faith that, with the Lord’s blessings, this surgery will eliminate the cancer from my body,” Tisdale said in a statement.

In February 2007, Tisdale suffered a broken right leg when he fell down a flight of stairs at his Los Angeles home. While examining that injury, doctors discovered a cancerous cyst just below his knee. – NewsOK.com

Milton Nascimento & The Jobim Trio | Novas Bossas

Milton Nascimento

Milton Nascimento

Tom Jobim was the originator of the new Bossa Nova beat in Brazil in the late 50’s and it was Joao Gilberto that first mastered the guitar technique to introduce it to the world in 58. They both said that Milton Nascimento was the only singer that could reach the original pitch of the compositions and so it is entirely fitting that he has teamed up here with Tom’s son Paulo and grandson Daniel for a recording session to celebrate both Tom Jobim and the anniversary of his invention of the Bossa Nova. Mixing songs by Tom Jobim, Milton Nascimento and Daniel Jobim, this is a true master class in the art of the Bossa and a new milestone in Brazilian music. An important, as well as a sublime release. – Amazon.com
