Astral Project |

“Astral Project: Over the last 20 years, Astral Project has been the best jazz ensemble in New Orleans and is recognized as one of the finest modern jazz combos in the country. The band is entering its 30th year together next year, and it has been a launch pad rather than a prison, with each member playing important roles in the community individually as well as in the group. The ubiquitous drummer Jonny Vidacovich has a regular Maple Leaf gig as part of the The Trio with bassist George Porter Jr. and a different guest each week. guitarist Steve Masakowski is an endowed chair in UNO’s jazz studies program, and Tony Dagradi teaches at Loyola while playing with the New Orleans Saxophone Quartet. bassist James Singleton has played everything from trad jazz to experimental jazz with 3Now 4 and its various offshoots. The band has a finger in almost every jazz pot in the city.” – CDBaby.com

One of my innermost desires as a music enthusiast is to always be open to explore the fertile ground that awaits us as new artists challenges us with fresh, aspiring and creative music. In this case, I’m honored to introduce Virgin Island native Reuben Rogers. Yes, this young and endowed bassist has played with a host of commendable musicians including saxophonist Joshua Redman, trumpeter Nicholas Payton, and guitarist Mark Whitfield.

Initially, I was blessed to hear Rogers play with the aforementioned artists. Early in 2007, I had the pleasure of being introduced to his solo project titled ā€œThe Things I Amā€ which was co-produced by renowned saxophonist Ron Blake who also hails from the Virgin Islands.

It’s not every day you hear scores of men arguing over whose is the smallest. But in the modern world of mobile computing, it’s a conversation that’s becoming increasingly common.

The nature of today’s business environment means needing to stay connected wherever you are. From ultraslim notebooks to ultramobile PCs and smartphones, the options to have high-tech tools in the pocket of your pants are growing by the month. Kenny Garrett | "Sketches"

Kenny Garrett |

On September 23, saxophonist and composer Kenny Garrett will make his Mack Avenue Records debut with Sketches Of MD: Live At The Iridium. A capricious excursion into open-ended melodies over grooves that reflect the artistry of key sidemen from Miles Davis’ many groups – from John Coltrane to Kenny himself – Sketches Of MD is a compositionally relaxed yet “live” record of some music Kenny performed at the Iridium Jazz Club in New York City with his band (Benito Gonzales on piano, Nat Reeves on bass, and Jamire Williams on drums) and special guest, tenor saxophone legend Pharoah Sanders.
