Personnel also includes bassists Buster Williams, Peter Washington and Andy Gonzalez, drummers Jack DeJohnette, (younger brother) Peter Turre and Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez, and Quartette Indigo. J.J. Johnson, the distinguished father of the modern jazz trombone, wrote the liner notes. – Concord Music Group

Taylor Eigsti, Let It Come to You

Taylor Eigsti | "Let It Come to You"

At the mere age of twenty-three this young and gifted pianist-composer-band leader Taylor Eigsti has been truly blessed with tons of accolades and frankly deservingly so since his Concord Records debut “Lucky To Be Me.” In 2008, he explores new frontiers in jazz by leaping forward into the future with his compelling sophomore release titled “Let It Come To You” produced by Eigsti and Chris Dunn.

As an artist, it always helps to surround oneself by a wealth of talent whether playing live or recording in the studio. On this gathering, Taylor calls his working ensemble lead by guitarist and collaborator Julian Lage, Reuben Rogers on bass and Eric Harland on drums with such special guests Joshua Redman on tenor saxophone, and Edmar Castaneda on Colombian harp are primary torch barriers on this session to invoke their enormous skill set into these 11 wonderfully played and arranged original and reinvented standard(s) compositions.

Lou Donaldson

Lou Donaldson

Brother Lou Donaldson serves up here one soulful dish with “Midnight Creeper” featuring the gifted groove makers Lonnie Smith on the organ, Idris Muhammad on drums, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, and George Benson on the guitar. This funky gem was recorded back in ’68. Midnight Creeper is one of many funky/crossover type offerings derived from sweet, sassy and soulful sounds of black music influenced by the funky sound of James Brown among others during the 60’s.

With a host of talented artist on Blue Note, artists like Horace Silver and soul jazz rival Cannonball Adderly from Riverside Records tackled the tingy side of gospel. An then we have flute master Herbie Mann [Memphis Underground] , and Donaldson disciples “Big John Patton, Grant Green, Reuben Wilson and Lonnie Smith” brought in the funky grooves of Boogaloo. – Rob Young | The Urban Flux
