Russell Gunn | Love Stories – [HighNote Records, 2008]

Russell Gunn, Love Stories

With a singular style that incorporates the influences of masters like Miles Davis, Lee Morgan, and the underrated Booker Little. While currently honing his skills in Atlanta, GA jazz trumpeter Russell Gunn returns with a new release on September 9th.

“Love Stories” is no doubt, an “unconventional” interpretation of the “love themed album” from a jazz/hip-hop perspective. Nevertheless, Russell steps out by reinventing his voice with a intoxicating sound. Perhaps, his hand’s down approach to this project could easily be considered his overall best producing, arranging, and playing to date. “Love Stories” features a quintet of alto, keys, bass, drums, trumpet, augmented by percussion, guitar, and voice, along with tenor sax great Kirk Whalum.

Wycliffe Gordon

Wycliffe Gordon

For his seventh Criss Cross recording, Wycliffe Gordon pairs off with Andre Hayward, his long-time partner in the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra trombone section, for a carefree, straightforward, swinging romp through various nooks and crannies of the jazz and Broadway songbooks, as well as the several varieties of the blues.

Pianist Mike LeDonne, bassist John Webber, and drum giant Kenny Washington push, prod, and complement the flow throughout. – Criss Cross Records
