Heads Up Releases – DJ Remix of Incognito’s Tales From the Beach

Incognito, More Tales

Incognito, More Tales

Throughout its thirty-year history, Incognito has had one foot in the dance world and another in live concert performance. It was London DJ Joe Williams who first introduced the group to DJ Chris Hill and helped them score a record deal. In the early ‘90s, Incognito was championed by another DJ, Gilles Peterson at Talking Loud, creator of the Acid Jazz scene.

Now, an international cast of the world’s best DJs has remixed the songs from Incognito’s 2008 Heads Up debut, Tales From The Beach, by injecting them with a variety of fresh, modern styles. The recording features the handiwork of such well known masters and fast rising new talents as Dimitri & DJ Meme, Tortured Soul, Simon Grey, Mark De Clive, Ski Oakenfull, Christian Prommer, Physics, DJ Day, Yam Who?, Mystery & Matt Early, Outside and Incognito’s own Francis Hylton.

The set as a whole provides an impressive cross section of some of the dance world’s brightest stars. “They are not created for comparison,” says Incognito’s founder/frontman Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick. “Their purpose is not to compete with or enhance the original. They have their own identity and take you on their own individual journeys.” ~ Concord Music Group/Heads Up

According to reports, the Record Industry Association of America, or RIAA, is changing its strategy for prosecuting illegal peer-to-peer downloaders. The group will now work with Internet Service Providers (ISPs) rather than attacking individuals.

A few years ago, it got very scary for those actively downloading illegal music online. In 2006, the Record Industry Association of America began picking off individuals caught in the act with often devastating results; we all remember the case of Jammie Thomas, the Minnesota single mother found guilty of downloading a handful of songs and subsequently fined over $200,000. Larry Young | Into Somethin’ [Blue Note/1964] Classic Jazz

This is one of those albums that keeps finding it’s way back to the cd player over and over again. If you are unfamiliar with the music of Larry Young, this is the perfect place to start, especially since it was his debut as a leader. The combo of Young with the likes of Sam Rivers (saxaphone), Grant Green (guitar), and Elvin Jones (drums) are one of those great combinations that just seemed to be part and parcel of the Blue Note label. Everyones playing is perfectly complimented to each other. Youngs playing, which is like no other in jazz, reminds one more often of a saxaphonist than a keyboardist. The lines that he forms are uniquely his own and bring true originality to the pieces. A note to all: if you wish to purchase this disc, be quick about it! Into Somethin’ is part of Blue Note’s Connoisseur series of limited release recordings. Once it is gone, who knows when we will see it again. Fair warning. ~ Amazon.com/Rick Mathis

Esperanza Spalding

At 23 the versatile vocalist/bassist Esperanza Spalding of Portland, OR second album “Esperanza” is definitely well within our favorite jazz recordings for 2008. With that said, this shouldn’t surprise you that she’s our featured artist for the “Vid of The Week.”

Gerald Albright, GIVING MYSELF TO YOU

Gerald Albright -][- Giving Myself To You –Mp3– [Atlantic Records, 1995 | Review]

By now, many of you have had the pleasure to meet virtuoso saxophonist Gerald Albright’s music. His timbre continues to simmer with a compassionate yet conversational in tone therefore allowing him to have one of the most distinctive voices in instrumental music. “Giving Myself To You,” [my favorite] his 1995 release on Atlantic Records is in my opinion was a defining moment for him as a soloist. With this project he expanded his chops and compositional palette by offering listeners and opportunity to hear him in a different context.

Kafele | New Orleans Sessions [Jazz/Nu-Voices/2008]

Growing up in Louisiana was a very profound experience.  It was the perfect environment for me to cultivate my skills as an aspiring jazz artist.  Though I decided to relocate long ago, I felt it only right to return in order to record an album with my friends and fellow artists who still reside there.  I can remember a strong sense of community when I used to live there.  In fact, the reason why my family moved there was because my father (Owusu Bandele) had decided to teach at Southern University so that he would be able to contribute to the community by assisting African American small farmers. ~ CDBaby.com

Kafele | Acid Reign [Smooth/Nu-Voices/2008]

Kafele, trumpeter, composer and producer, has been playing the trumpet for over 20 years. The name Kafele (pronounced kuh-FAY-lay) is of Egyptian origin, and means “worth dying for”. Born in Baltimore, Maryland and raised in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Kafele was first exposed to jazz by his parents. In fact, he attributes his love and appreciation for the art to his father who often listened to recordings of John Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard and Miles Davis among others. Later, his brothers and sisters introduced him to Hip-Hop and R&B. As a byproduct of becoming a Chicago resident for about 10 years, Kafele was inundated with lively, upbeat house, afro-beat, and other types of dance music. ~ CDBaby.com
