Greeting’s and “Happy New Year,” to my fellow jazz enthusiast. We’ve finally began to settle down a bit after a short yet enthralling Christmas break. As we get prepared for the upcoming months hopefully the record industry and artist alike will continue to release new and provocative music. Perhaps, until new music arrives we’ve got a few exciting projects by four of the prolific artist in jazz for the “Weekend Spin.”

Hiromi | Spiral [Jazz-Fusion/Telarc Jazz/2006]

Hiromi Uehara may not be a household name but with each succeeding recording she proves herself a sophisticated composer and an astonishing and eclectic pianist. Her style, while incorporating elements from Ellington to Bad Plus, is unique. She criss-crosses stylistic boundries on Spiral, keeping the sound interesting on every track – all originals. With the exception of Return of Kung-Fu World Champion, she stays away from the electronics that were more present in Brain and somewhat in Another Mind. Infact Kung Fu…is the barrier to a 5-star rating. At times, Uehara sounds a bit like Michel Petrucciani when she sticks to the acoustic piano, though she refrains from being as showy as the French great. Tony grey on bass and drummer, Martin Vailhora round out an outstanding trio. ~ Amazon.com

flux_music_technology24Digital music, long the bane of the music industry, may finally be something that record label executives can smile about.

For 2008, total music sales rose 10 percent to 1.51 billion units sold, up from 1.36 billion units the year before, according to industry tracker Nielsen. Units tallied include physical albums, digital albums and tracks, and music videos. The biggest contributor to the growth was digital music, Nielsen reported. There were 1.07 billion digital tracks sold in 2008, up 27 percent from 2007, and there were 65.8 million digital albums sold, up 32 percent.

Those numbers square with recent reports on music downloads. For the third quarter, for instance, legal music downloads from sites such as iTunes and AmazonMP3 were up 29 percent from the same period a year earlier, according to NPD Group.

While touring in support of his 2007 release, Back East, Redman decided he wanted to continue exploring sax/bass/drums trio format and started to compose new material with that often challenging configuration in mind. The result is Compass, a disc that Redman describes as ‘a journey for me…an expansion on, and an extension of Back East.’ Compass goes in an entirely new direction for Redman; its an exhilarating leap into uncharted territory. Compass is nothing short of mesmerizing, its conceptual risks paying off for musician and listener alike. ~ Amazon.com

gwen_ifillIn The Breakthrough, veteran journalist Gwen Ifill surveys the American political landscape, shedding new light on the impact of Barack Obama’s stunning presidential victory and introducing the emerging young African American politicians forging a bold new path to political power.

Ifill argues that the Black political structure formed during the Civil Rights movement is giving way to a generation of men and women who are the direct beneficiaries of the struggles of the 1960s. She offers incisive, detailed profiles of such prominent leaders as Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick, and U.S. Congressman Artur Davis of Alabama (all interviewed for this book), and also covers numerous up-and-coming figures from across the nation. ~ Amazon.com
