Heather Headley | Audience of One [Gospel | EMI, 2009] | Music Review
You know, it’s not very often that we will steer away from our beloved jazz at The Urban Flux. However, as music enthusiast you know good music is simply what it is …. good music. That said, every generation unveils a multi-faceted talent that’s fresh, stunning, powerful, and delivers sweet melodies and harmonic symmetry that beckons us to seriously take note.
Therefore, on this occasion I’m compelled to acknowledged with respect that I’m amazed by not only her voice but with lyrical content on “Audience of One” by the dynamic vocal artistry of Tony award winner Heather Headley. Surprised, and pleasantly so. Being a daughter of a preacher, the gifted and beautiful songstress describes this album as being a “natural transition” and how she was uncomfortable with the provocative lyrics submitted to her on two previous records.
With “Audience of One,” the third project by the Trinidad native, [Indiana-raised] and multiple Grammy nominee Heather Headley transcends genre by singing with a profound intensity on these ten powerfully anointed songs. Headley, fondly recalls her early years as she honed her skills “singing in a one room church.” Her pursuit for excellence has paid off as her voice inhabits an abundance of grace on these inspiring spiritual gems. These jewels are engulfed with enjoyable intricacies of familiar voices like her contemporaries Yolanda & Oleta Adams and Cece Winans.
I’ll be the first admit, I absolutely adored Heather’s debut album “This is Who I Am.” No question about it, I will also cherish “Audience of One” for years to come. ~ Rob/The Urban Flux
“Explaining the album title, AUDIENCE OF ONE, the Trinidad-born, Indiana-raised, and Northwestern University educated star gives credit to her husband Brian Musso. He reminded her one day about the little church back home, “the joy that I found singing in that empty church to my `audience of one.’ And so that is what this album is… a girl singing to the only audience that really matters … Heather Headley”
