Cannonball Adderley Quintet | In San Francisco | Live [Riverside, 1959] Classic Jazz Essentials

In the late ’50s and early ’60s, Cannonball Adderley enjoyed his greatest popularity as measured by the commercial success of Riverside releases featuring his own group with his brother Nat on cornet. The sessions were frequently recorded live, included spoken introductions by the ebullient leader, presented some “accessible” tunes, and spotlighted at least one real crowd-pleaser (“This Here,” “Sack O’ Woe,” “Jive Samba,” “Mercy Mercy, Mercy”), each later appearing as a hit single.

“In San Francisco” from 1959 not only established the “live action/hit single” formula but is, in its own right, an exemplary session, perhaps superior to the later Adderley brothers’ recordings with pianist Victor Feldman or Joe Zawinul and tenorist/flutist Yusef Lateef. The presence of the hard-swinging Bobby Timmons certainly increased the funk and soul appeal of this Adderley edition (though some of the earlier editions of Adderley brothers’ groups on Mercury and EmArcy are also worth checking out).

The Lovers, The Dreamers And Me, Jane Monheit’s eagerly anticipated new CD, is set for release on Concord Records January 20th, 2009. An ode to songwriters past and present whom Monheit greatly admires, The Lovers, The Dreamers And Me is a sumptuously sung passionate song cycle of 13 tracks produced by jazz veteran Matt Pierson. The Lovers, The Dreamers And Me is Monheit’s ninth CD and will be accompanied by a world tour starting in New York City on release date.

The Lovers, The Dreamers And Me features the songs of contemporary songwriters such as Fiona Apple (“Slow Like Honey”), Corrine Bailey Rae (“Like A Star”) and Paul Simon (“I Do It For Your Love”), alongside such jazz and pop classics as Cole Porter’s “Get Out Of Town,” Jimmy Dorsey’s “I’m Glad There Is You,” Leonard Bernstein’s “Lucky To Be Me,” William C. Barnes’ “Something Cool” (the June Christy classic) and the Brazilian gem, “No Tomorrow,” by Ivan Lins.

“I wanted to do something different with this record,” says Monheit, “and so I chose songs that meant a lot to me in many different ways and from a wide range of songwriters and genres – from female artists my age to celebrated legends.”

Hubert Laws -][- Say It with Silence [Columbia|Import-Sony, 1978]

Issued in January 1978 on Columbia JC 35022 in the USA, “Say It With Silence” is a less well-known jazz-funk flute-driven soul LP – and now this superb sounding November 2008 remaster finally makes it available – albeit as a limited edition CD import from Japan (Sony Music SICP 2122).

As you can see from the short playing time, it’s a bare-bones reissue of the album with no extras or outtakes and the booklet is basic – functional at best. It is REMASTERED however – and beautifully so – very subtle, really warm and with virtually no hiss on any of the tracks. And when the sound needs muscle, the mastering has it – a sweet, sweet transfer and a great job done.
