Jeremy Pelt | November [Jazz/Max Jazz Records/2008]

MAXJAZZ is pleased to present trumpeter Jeremy Pelt in November, his fourth recording for the label as part of its horn series. Pelt wrote and arranged all of the compositions on this acoustic, straight-ahead release. November features Pelt’s working quintet including tenor saxophonist JD Allen, pianist Danny Grissett, bassist Dwayne Burno and drummer Gerald Cleaver (special guest percussionist Jeff Haynes). ~ Source: Amazon.com

Jeremy Pelt | Shock Value: Live at Smoke [LIVE]

Jeremy Pelt, Shock Value

Jeremy Pelt, Shock Value

This CD justifies the critics who repeatedly named Jeremy Pelt the best up-n-coming jazz trumpeter. It is an impressive blend of acoustic and electronic trumpet (we’ll get to the rest of the band in a minute). I only discovered Pelt in 2006, but became a fan because of his straight-ahead trumpet abilities — both for technique and big-sound. As more a traditionalist, I never would have guessed that I’d be so riveted by Jeremy’s electronic trumpet, but he pulls it off in a most compelling way. ~ Amazon/Evan Hendricks

Pod To PC

Pod To PC

Windows only: Pod to PC can grab the music and movies off nearly any Windows-formatted iPod for transferring to your PC, and avoids duplicates while doing so.

Install and fire up the software, and if your iPod is connected by a USB transfer cable, Pod to PC should find it and offer up basic stats:

Most notable is that, along with an iTunes-like read on space use, iPod name, and the like, Pod to PC shows how many of the tracks on a device are already loaded into iTunes on your computer. So that “Automatic Transfer” button smooshed into the lower-right corner (Pod to PC has a pretty rough graphical interface, in case you couldn’t tell) does exactly that, grabbing uncopied tracks and placing them. Or you can tackle a transfer manually:

Michael Wolff | Joe’s Strut [Wrong Records, 2009]

Michael Wolff

Michael Wolff

On February 10th, Michael’s new CD, Joe’s Strut will be released on Wrong Records.

“Michael Wolff (Wrong)”Joe’s Strut” is a strong example of how pianist Michael Wolff is able handle playing in varying-sized groups. The basis of all the work is Wolff, bassist Chip Jackson and drummer Victor Jones, a group that has been together since the ’70s. Bassist Richie Goods, a Pittsburgh native, sits in for Jackson on several tracks, but the biggest change is when the group adds Steve Wilson on soprano saxophone and Ian Young on tenor. That takes the album from a trio doing a rhythmically clever “If I Were a Bell” to the quintet doing a driving “Harbour Island. The best offerings though are the quintet’s “Freedom,” an original by Wolff, and the trio’s sensitive “Come Rain of Come Shine.” Existing in a strong way in between is the beautiful Wolff original, “Wheel of Life,” which is done in a quartet with Young.” ~ Bob Karlovits, Pittsburg Tribune
