Samuel Quinto Trio | Salsa´n Jazz [Samuel Quinto Trio]

Samuel Quinto is an exceptional piano player, his virtuoso, often percussive playing, often with a continuous “tumbao”, the rhtyhmical bass figure, accompanying the other soloists improvisations as well as his own, is intoxicating. His compositions, influenced among others by Michel Camilo, Chick Corea and Gonzalo Rubalcaba, are original own melodies which can have – like “on call” – different colourings, depending on the ethnic or geographic origin of theme, dance or title.

Born in Belem/Pará, North-Brasil, and raised in Salvador da Bahía. The gospel singing in the Baptist church “Igreja Batista Sinai”, which the family regularly visits, is accompanied by various good piano players, and the seven year old boy is fascinated by them, wants to learn to play everything that they can play, and wants to become a better piano player than the best of them. All alone, only by ear, he teaches himself everything. In his parents’ house there is a piano. The parents encourage him, let him do as he likes. Piano classes are hard to finance, and he anyway doesn’t want to practice scales and the classical canon.

Recently, there’s rumors that it’s possible that cellphones cause brain tumors. Hopefully the researchers can help resolve this issue.

Article: Are cell phones safe? For years, studies have provided conflicting conclusions. Today, there is still no clear answer. But experts agree on one thing: more research is needed to find out the answer.

In an effort to raise awareness among consumers and to urge government leaders to allocate more funding for research, an international group of researchers is gathering in Washington, D.C. later this month to present study findings and to lobby government officials. Go here, for more details.

Actual Proof | Paradigm Shift [Actual Proof, 2009]

Sonic explorations, soulful grooves, nasty funk. Paradigm Shift is a revolutionary approach to Jazz-Funk.

Scientists and historians use the term “Paradigm Shift” to describe the moments in history when an established scientific theory or paradigm is replaced by one that changes everything. The shift entails looking at the world differently: When Copernicus made everyone see that the earth is not the center of the universe, everything changed. Actual Proof’s debut CD likewise institutes a sonic revolution, a new approach to Jazz-Funk.

Actual Proof is a unique jazz-fusion project that utlizes mallet percussion (xylophone, vibraphone, marimba), keys and synths, electric bass, acoustic and electronic percussion. The group expresses itself through rich grooves and rythmic explorations. The group draws on a wide range of traditions (Jazz, Afro-Cuban, Funk, and World-Beat) to create a unique and captivating sound. Actual Proof’s debut CD contains ten original songs that capture each member’s musical experience.

Gretchen Parlato | In A Dream [Obliqsound, 2009]

“‘In a Dream’ belongs in the 4-5 Grammy nominations for Best Jazz Vocal Album…”

“There’s an enigmatic quality to Gretchen Parlato’s singing, a mysterious brew of sound and breath, of simmering inner rhythms and phrasing that curls seductively around the words. The first track, Stevie Wonder’s “I Can’t Help It,” immediately announces that the album is going be an extraordinary musical experience.

Parlato has been blessed with extraordinary talents — an unerring sense of pitch, utterly relaxed rhythmic clarity, an open ear for harmony. Other singers have similar abilities. But what makes Parlato so unique is the imaginative way in which she uses those skills to rove deeply within the instrumental sounds, while still retaining her presence as the vocal center of the music.”
