MoodSwing, from the onset the young and gifted saxophonist named Joshua Redman unveils the goods treating each note with grace, purpose and arranges these wonderful compositions with an enriched passion while he flirts successfully with lyrical finesse. Funny thing, critics dare to compare Redman with his rivals engaging negatively by insisting that he hasn’t come full circle into a place as many of his contemporaries have supposedly arrived. Nonsense, as I listen to him play his horn he’s obviously not Coltrane … nor is he trying to emulated his sound. Therefore, on this session Joshua as expected pours out his very soul to evoke a fresh spirit into the creative musings on a tapestry appropriately titled “MoodSwing.” ~ The Urban Flux

Joshua Redman Quartet | MoodSwing – [Warner Bros, 1994]

Joshua Redman Quartet, MoodSwing

Joshua Redman Quartet, MoodSwing

This recording in my opinion is the freshest and finest work that Joshua Redman has produced. Considering that the band make-up of Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride and Brian Blade are three of the baddest young jazz musicians today, they have also become major band leaders in their own right. I think this was the recording that set them all on their way. The songs vary from melodic to sonically intense. McBride and Blade blaze a rhythmic trail followed by the creative yet subtle piano stylings of Mehldau, all giving way to the superior improvisational skills of Redman. The songs seem almost lyrical in their expression. Whether you are a Joshua Redman fan, or someone who has never experienced his music before, this is the beginning (although he had two prior quality releases prior) of the spectacular career of one of the finest tenor sax players of these times… —Greg Randolph

In 2004, the talented vocalist, guitarist and arranger Gabriela Anders’ give us the acclaimed “Last Tango in Rio.” The gifted songstress returns with the seductive “Bossa Beleza,” her latest release on Koch Records!! Her new album encompasses texturally a soulful marriage of Bossa Nova, & Brazilian standards matched with her own effervescent songs and distinct arrangements will leave you spellbound. ~ The Urban Flux

Gabriel Anders, Bossa Beleza

Gabriela Anders was born to music amidst the grace, paradox and tradition of Argentina. Her father is a noted jazz saxophonist, her grandfather was a classical violinist, and her grandmother a piano teacher. Gabriela studied classical guitar and piano at a Conservatory in Buenos Aires. “Growing up, there was a lot of Brazilian music, and I was fascinated with it because it’s so harmonically rich and melodically interesting.”

“Bossa Beleza” blends Gabriela’s immediately recognizable sound with that of her first musical love, classic Bossa Nova. Eleven soulful and intimate tracks, including the Brazilian standards “Dindi“, “Folhas Secas“, “One Note Samba” and “Agua de Beber“. Gabriela is happy to have finally documented her own vision of a style that was so much a part of her own musical development, and that she continues to feel such an affinity for.

John Patitucci | Remembrance [Concord Jazz, 2009]

John Patitucci Trio

John Patitucci Trio

Given that jazz bass players are typically cast as part of the rhythm support team, only a handful of them have become leaders in their own right. Taking the lead from such jazz masters as Charles Mingus, Ray Brown, Ron Carter and Dave Holland who pioneered the advance of the bass, the next generation of acoustic and electric bassists have been crafting musical statements in leadership roles.

At the top of that class is acoustic and electric bassist John Patitucci, who delivers his latest Concord Jazz project, Remembrance, a remarkable outing of 11 straight-ahead-to-funky-to-classical-tinged originals featuring an astounding trio comprising saxophone maestro Joe Lovano and brilliant drummer Brian Blade. Almost every tune is dedicated to a musician, hence the title. The CD is the bassist’s 13th as a leader and seventh for Concord, with which he made his debut in 1997 with One More Angel. Guests include his wife Sachi Patitucci on cello and percussionist Rogerio Boccato, who delivers simpatico rhythms with Blade on four tracks that Patitucci says makes them sound “like one giant organism.”
