Shelby Brown -][- The Meaning of Life – [S. B. Records, 2009]
Detroit sax man Shelby Brown has outdone himself on his new solo release, The Meaning of Life! After successes with Mircle (his collaboration with guitarist Dee Brown in 2003) and his first solo album, NO BOUNDARIES in 2005, this project has been widely anticipated, and now that it’s here, it won’t disappoint. Shelby has an engaging style and tone that remind me at times of the late George Howard, and his interplay with guest artist Nick Colionne on the tracks “All Out” and “A.J. Regrooved” makes for performances that are spot on for the Smooth Jazz format.
In addition, singers Chanda Long (“Sayl Away” and “Planes, Trains & Automobiles”) and Alvin Fraizer (“I’m in Love Again”) add sparkling vocal variety to this outstanding CD.
It’s top drawer Smooth Jazz from one of the most talented players out there today. Don’t overlook Shelby Brown’s The Meaning of Life.
