ON HER MARCH 16 RELEASE For MACK AVENUE RECORDS

Tia Fuller - Decisive Steps

The astonishingly gifted, Colorado-born, alto / soprano saxophonist / flautist Tia Fuller is at home at all points of the musicverse – from her show-stopping solos as a member of superstar Beyoncé’s all-female band, to her scintillatingly swinging jazz dates and recordings. Her newest Mack Avenue release Decisive Steps, is the long-awaited follow-up to her 2007 label debut Healing Space. It features her Beyoncé bandmate, drummer Kim Thompson; bassist Miriam Sullivan; Fuller’s sister, Shamie Royston on piano and Fender Rhodes; with special guests, trumpeter Sean Jones and bassist Christian McBride (both Mack Avenue label mates); vibraphonist Warren Wolf; and tap dancer Maurice Chestnut.

“It’s a continuation of Healing Space, evolving from a stationary place of healing to steps of action,” Fuller says. “I’ve been in the mindset of really moving forward to the next level in my life, constantly being in the mindset of greatness, relentless in my pursuit and progressing with purpose by embracing my talents, recognizing my strengths and improving upon my weaknesses…but also in not being afraid of change; stepping forward in faith and not in fear.” Continue reading →

Fernando Huergo | Provinciano – [Sunnyside Records, 2008]

Fernando Huergo - Provinciano

This is not just another record of music by an Argentinean musician. Provinciano is a brave attempt to create a new metaphor based on traditional harmonics and rhythms that inhabit the Argentinean Tango and folkloric music. Fernando Huergo, bassist extraordinaire makes a huge leap of faith as he – first explains – and then demonstrates the depth of his creativity and staggering virtuosity in his musical sojourn and his organically evolving bass playing.

Alejo Carpentier once wrote, fictionally of course, of a journey that he once undertook to find the origin of sound. That mythical journey took him into the Amazon and where he lost himself among a very primitive, yet sophisticated people and discovered the magical elixir of sound – a pure sound itself. On Provinciano, Huergo makes a similar journey; only his is one that can no longer traverse a primitive sound scape. But his is a journey that takes place in the interior landscape of the musical mind. Here the musician has imbued the many magical rhythmic impulses that ignite creativity. Amazingly, these parallel the same impulses that have driven jazz music through the ages. The impulse to create continually through time and space – to improvise. Then there is the element of swing and the joyful heartache of the blues. —Raul de Gama

Greg Reitan | Antibes – [Sunnyside Records, 2010]

Greg Reitan - Antibes

This is the second recording effort by a trio led by a young player who certainly would seem to have full command of his instrument, a warm sound and a fluent touch, and who, in his mid-thirties, has developed a readily identifiable personal approach to his instrument.

As a professional pianist, Greg is the leader of an award winning trio which placed 2nd in the 1996 Hennessy Jazz Search in New York. Greg was also a finalist in the 1995 Great American Jazz Piano Competition and he was the recipient of the inaugural 2002 ASCAP Young Jazz Composer Award. Two songs written by Greg and performed by his group are featured in a recent film “Bark”, starring Lisa Kudrow and Vincent D’Onofrio. Greg also writes music for the concert hall. His “Clarinet Concerto: In Three Movements” was performed by the USC Symphony conducted by Donald Crockett with soloist Donald Foster. “Los Angeles Fanfare” was also given its premiere by the USC Symphony.
