Kenny Garrett | Pursuance: The Music of John Coltrane – [Warner Jazz, 1996]

Kenny Garrett - Pursuance: The Music of John Coltrane

Here we have a tribute to John Coltrane from young alto saxophonist Kenny Garrett, with support from Pat Metheny on guitar, Rodney Whitaker on bass, and Brian Blade on drums. Ten of the 11 songs on Pursuance are Coltrane compositions (surprisingly, “Naima” is not included), plus there is one original composition attributed to the quartet. Although his recordings with his own group might lead one to assume otherwise, Metheny really shines when accompanying saxophonists (his recordings with Gary Thomas and Josh Redman are both excellent), and his guitar really adds to the musical tapestry woven by this tight group. David Binney and Alan Ferber | In The Paint – [Posi-Tone, 2009]

David Binney and Alan Ferber - In the Paint

Alto Sax sensation David Binney joins forces with Trombonist Alan Ferber on “In The Paint“. Turning each of their compositional talents toward the harmonious creation of a wide variety of entertaining ensemble performances the entire session is highlighted by a pleasant combination of melodicism and surprising improvisations. The program is delightfully engaging and prominently features the flowing rhythms of veteran drummer Gerald Cleaver, the inventive counterpoint of bassist Thomas Morgan, an interesting new discovery in Peter Schlamb on vibes, and the wide harmonic palette of the celebrated musical prodigy John Escreet on piano. As always thanks for stopping by, this week I’ve got another list of new jazz releases for you to check out.

Featured Album of the Week

Lage Lund -|- Unlikely Stories – [Criss Cross, 2010]

Lage Lund - Unlikely Stories

Guitarist Lage Lund made his first Criss Cross leader debut in 2008 with the brilliant Early Songs. Paring down from a quintet to quartet, he returns with Unlikely Stories, a vibrant set of mainly original tunes with a superb supporting cast: pianist Edward Simon, bassist Ben Street and drummer Bill Stewart.

The first-ever electric guitarist to attend Juilliard, Lund possesses a staggering harmonic sophistication and a singularly fluid voice as a soloist, qualities that leap out on Unlikely Stories and, no doubt, on many more releases to come. —Amazon.com

Anat Cohen

On April 13, Anat Cohen will release her first live album, ‘Clarinetwork: Live At The Village Vanguard‘ on her own Anzic Records. The album was recorded on one evening – July 5, 2009 – during an historic 6-night residency at the legendary venue in which Cohen honored the centennial of clarinet legend Benny Goodman. The album is a musical tour-de-force that finds Anat reworking the Goodman oeuvre as you’ve never heard it before, joined by the stellar rhythm section of Benny Green (piano), Peter Washington (bass), and Lewis Nash (drums).
