– Arturo Sandoval ::|:: A Time For Love – [Concord Jazz, 2010]

In what promises to be a breakthrough achievement in a long and celebrated career, jazz impresario Arturo Sandoval‘s collection A Time For Love will be released by Concord Jazz. The album features classical compositions for orchestra and jazz trio by Grammy-winning arranger Jorge Calandrelli along with a sprinkling of American jazz standards by composers including Gershwin and Chaplin.

The Havana-born Sandoval, a multiple Grammy-winning horn player, has been yearning to do this album for decades. “It’s been twenty years since I came to live in the United States,” he explains, “and practically every year, with every record label who’s signed me, I’ve asked to make this style album. ‘Let me play softly,’ I said. ‘Let me play ballads with big orchestration behind me. Let me hear the violins and violas, the oboes and the flutes. Let me be inspired by a symphonic setting.” Continue reading →

Frédéric Yonnet - Front and Center

Frédéric Yonnet ::|:: Front Center – [The Orchard, 2004]

-::BIO::- When it comes to the harmonica, Frédéric Yonnet knows how to turn skeptics into believers. Most people perceive the harmonica as a “side” instrument used in country and blues. However, Yonnet is one of a handful of musicians to successfully demonstrate the harmonica’s versatility as a lead instrument in contemporary jazz, R&B and other genres of music. Yonnet says, “Limitations are not in the instrument but in one’s thinking.”

Clearly, Yonnet has no limits. Just listen to his sound. It funks. It rocks. It hips and hops. It grooves. It sways. It testifies. It prays. It has a reverence for blues and jazz while appealing to a generation breed on pop rock and hip‐hop. He as performed with music legend Stevie Wonder and recently recorded with generational icons, the Jonas Brothers. His current stint with music royalty Prince has exposed him and his powerhouse sound to a wider, more diverse audience. Praise from Dave Chappelle and performances with neo‐soul queen Erykah Badu, Soul prodigy John Legend, jazzman Branford Marsalis, and Jewish raggamuffin Matisyahu have all contributed to his mission to change the way the music industry, musicians and enthusiasts regard the “pocket” instrument.

Look out for Yonnet’s upcoming album “REED MY LIPS: THE ROUGH CUT” on May 4th. While you’re here, visit http://www.fredyonnet.com/index.html for more information about this exciting artist!

Simon Goulding - Familia

Simon Goulding ::|:: Familia – [Simon Goulding, 2010]

Debut album with 12 tracks of a hard hitting mix of Jazz/Latin/Fusion with smooth melodies woven around intricate and intriguing rhythms to create a sound thats Funky and original with more than a hint of bass.

-::BIO::- I grew up in the village of Coppull, Lancashire, NW England. I Started playing the bass guitar at the age of 9 and quickly realized that it was what I wanted to do for ever. How did the bass guitar come into my hands…..Well.. I remember watching an Eric Clapton concert on TV as a kid. I noticed a guy stood at the back next to the drummer who was making the band groove and the music made me get goose bumps everytime the bass player was shown on TV. I then started to be obsessed with the bass and it’s role in the band sitting in front of the radio, TV and listening out for the bass and trying to find out who it was because most of the time they would’nt tell you who the band was. Years of intensive woodshedding followed. I studied music at school and actually was teaching at the school music centre while still a student. I studied music at Wigan & Leigh college obtaining a BTEC national diploma in performing arts and being awarded the college music prize on 2 consecutive years.

John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension - To The One

John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension ::|:: To The One – [Abstract Logix, 2010]

With his new album To The One, iconic guitarist, composer and 2010 Grammy Winner John McLaughlin looks backwards and forwards simultaneously. The six original songs are hauntingly evocative – with roiling rhythmic swells, modal expanses, and telepathic group interaction echoing the profound influence of John Coltrane’s 1965 spiritual jazz masterpiece A Love Supreme. The music of To The One was set down in the studio with very few overdubs, by McLaughlin’s current performing outfit, the Fourth Dimension: Gary Husband (keyboards, drums), Etienne M’Bappe (electric bass), and Mark Mondesir (drums).

Compositional devices clearly inspired by Coltrane are fused with elements of McLaughlin’s own multifaceted approach, all delivered with a group empathy and shared vision that harkens back to Coltrane’s fearless mid-’60s quartet of Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, and Jimmy Garrison. The effect of Jones’ kaleidoscopic approach to rhythm and drumming is especially felt, brilliantly recast and explored via McLaughlin’s gift for complex metrical structures.

Allen Toussaint, Take 6, Branford Marsalis, Mulgrew Miller, Roy Haynes, Manhattan Transfer, Kirk Whalum, and Mambo Legends Orchestra on tap.

Today, festival organizers announced the lineup for the 31st Detroit International Jazz Festival (DJF), Friday, September 3 through Monday, September 6, in downtown Detroit.

Subtitled “Flame Keepers – Carrying the Torch for Modern Jazz,” the Detroit Jazz Fest will feature a veritable “dean’s list” of alumni who passed through the “schools” of Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Betty Carter, Ray Brown, Miles Davis and Gil Evans. “2010 artists Mulgrew Miller, Bobby Watson, Branford Marsalis, Terence Blanchard, Randy Brecker, and Benny Green were all in Blakey’s band at one time or another,” says festival director Terri Pontremoli. “These musicians went on to develop their own bands, explore new territory and nurture a new generation of flame keepers,” she added. “In jazz, a lot of press is given to the veterans or to the young lions. I am happy to focus this year on these “middle men” who are in the peak of their creative and technical powers, making significant music in our time.” Continue reading →

Gregory Potter - Water

Gregory Porter ::|:: Water – [Motéma Music, 2010]

::BIO:: Gregory Porter discovered the music of Nat King Cole through his mother. At the age of five he wrote a song called “Once Upon A Time, I Had A Dreamboat” and recorded it onto a tape. When his mother returned home from work and heard it, she exclaimed in amazement “Boy, you sound like Nat King Cole.” From that moment on, Gregory had a desire to know more about this man and his music, and spent hours playing his mother’s old Cole records on his plastic Playskool record player. Since then, Gregory’s passion and commitment to expressing himself through music has remained strong, and he has developed a distinct style that ranges from jazz, funk, R&B, blues and gospel – one that is soulful while still maintaining the elegance he learned from his earlier influences. Nando Michelin – Reencontro

Nando Michelin ::|:: Reencontro [Fresh Sound Records, 2010]

In one of those eternal conundrums in the life of an artist, while Nando Michelin gets plenty of recognition he is relatively little known outside the small coterie of musicians who have taken the proverbial creative leap and transcended cultural boundaries. To be as little known as Michelin in outside intellectual circles is a pathetic fallacy. This is no fault of Michelin of course. He is technically superb and forges virtuosity and creativity together, turning out adventurous compositions. Michelin fortunately remains unfazed by his small following and he has released eight outstanding albums. His latest is Reencontro, a joyous reunion of his trio – with Esperanza Spalding on bass and Richie Barshay on drums and percussion – adding Leala Cyr, a musician with an ethereal voice and who plays a superb trumpet as well. The pianist’s teenage son, Tiago also joins in on drums, on two tracks. —Raul da Gama
