Fabrizio Sotti - Inner Dance

Driven by the dynamic interplay between Fabrizio Sotti’s colorful electric and acoustic guitar and Sam Barsh’s bluesy Hammond B-3 organ, the Italian born artist/composer’s highly anticipated E1 Music debut Inner Dance beautifully recalls the spirit of the mid-60s albums by his guitar hero Wes Montgomery and organ great Jimmy Smith. As inspired as the recording sounds, it may surprise longtime Sotti fans–and jazz guitar enthusiasts new to his multi-faceted vibe–that he originally conceived his first solo album since 2004’s Through My Eyes as a more traditional trio project. In a true sign of these technologically advanced times that Montgomery could never have fathomed, it was a computer hard drive failure-and the complete loss of the album’s original sessions-that gave rise to one of the most compelling jazz recordings of the year. Marc Cary - Focus Trio - Live 2009

Marc Cary | Focus Trio Live 2009! – [Motema Music, 2010]

With inimitable style, Marc Cary and his FOCUS Trio fuse together East Asian, Indian, African, and Native American influences within the African-American blues and jazz traditions. * Cary has earned four Grammy nominations for his ensemble work–most recently, a 2009 nomination for Best Contemporary Jazz Album as a participant of Stefon Harris’s/Blackout on Urbanis. His production work on Q-Tip’s The Renaissance helped earn that disc a nomination for Best Rap Album of 2009. * His power, imagination, and versatility are fueled by his many collaborations with a stellar array of popular artists in the jazz, R&B, and pop arenas including Me’Shell N’degeocello, Dizzy Gillespie, Betty Carter, Erykah Badu, Jackie McLean, Ani DiFranco, Wynton Marsalis, and many more.

The Modern Jazz Quartet

Modern Jazz Quartet | MJQ in the Movies – [Import, 2010]

Digitally remastered collection of soundtrack works from the legendary Jazz combo. Considering their worldwide popularity, it’s surprising that No Sun In Venice (1957) and Odds Against Tomorrow (1959) are the only two full-length movies for which The Modern Jazz Quartet were commissioned to supply new, original musical soundtracks. The songs were composed by John Lewis and performed by the MJQ (Lewis, Milt Jackson, Percy Heath and Connie Kay).

Much later, film maker Jim Jamusch selected ‘Baden Baden’ a track from a 1957 session for inclusion in his 2003 episodic movie Coffee And Cigarettes. More recently, familiar MJQ recordings have been used in episodes of The Sopranos. Giant Steps.

**SPECIAL U.S. APPEARANCE ON APRIL 23 AT ZINC BAR, NYC**

Lorraine Klaasen - Africa Calling

Soweto-born singer/dancer Lorraine Klaasen has spent her 30-plus-years career faithfully carrying the torch for traditional South African Township music, consistently performing and self-releasing her own CDs. On April 13, 2010, this powerful performer makes her long overdue debut on jazz and world music giant Justin Time Records with an 11-song offering of sunny, warm and danceable numbers titled Africa Calling. Jubilant and transfixing, the music was produced for a tight clutter-free rhythm quartet led by Mongezi Ntaka (former guitarist of the late, great South African reggae vocalist Lucky Dube) and features the moving and melodic bass playing of Bakithi Kumalo – a star contributor to pop legend Paul Simon’s band since his groundbreaking cross-cultural classic, Graceland. Both are dear friends of Ms. Klaasen. Continue reading →
