Wellstone Conspiracy ::|:: “Motives” – [Origin Records, 2010]

Four of the Northwest’s finest jazz artists reunite on “Motives” for a wide-ranging, adventurous recording of original works, including a free-wheeling tribute to drummer Ed Blackwell, and melodic pieces flavored by the modern harmonies of Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter. The disc closes with an impressionistic cover of Billy Strayhorn’s “A Flower is a Lovesome Thing.” Wellstone Conspiracy features Seattleites Bill Anschell on piano, Jeff Johnson on bass, and John Bishop on drums, joined by Idaho-based saxophonist Brent Jensen.

The four musicians continue to refine the collective artistry displayed on their 2006 debut CD, “One More Mile” (under Brent Jensen’s name), a cohesive group sound that All About Jazz reviewer John Barron described as: “…lively, inventive and beckons for repeated listening.

“…a great rapport these artists have developed over the years…their lines merge and unwind with endless invention.”

Features Christian McBride, Aaron Goldberg, Greg Hutchinson and Special Guest Roy Hargrove

Yotam - Resonance

On Resonance, his debut for Jazz Legacy Productions, accomplished Israeli guitarist-composer Yotam has one foot firmly planted in his bebop roots while also showcasing his love of Brazilian music, American blues, Jamaican reggae and Israeli folk songs. Tying this highly eclectic program together is Yotam’s exceptional, rhythmically assured six-string work, which is marked by his inviting warm tones, clear articulation and penchant for free flowing improvisation. The New York-based guitarist is joined on this potent offering by the stellar rhythm section of Christian McBride on bass, Aaron Goldberg on piano and Greg Hutchinson on drums. Special guest trumpeter Roy Hargrove also appears on faithful recreations of Clifford Brown’s “Daahoud” and Joe Henderson’s “Mamacita.”

“Aaron, Christian, Greg and Roy, in my opinion, are a few of the giants of their generation,” says Yotam. “I was very honored to have them on the record. We have forged a special chemistry together. And I think you can hear that on this album.”

PERFORMANCE DATES IN BOSTON AND NEW YORK

Lauren Kinhan - Avalon

Lauren Kinhan has been – and is – many things in her life: vocalist, songwriter, producer, musician, mother and wife. For most of her career, she’s been best known as a member of the highly acclaimed jazz vocal group, The New York Voices. As if to solidify her reputation as a group singer, in the past few years she’s also been performing regularly with two additional vocal ensembles, the more experimental Moss and the more traditional JaLaLa. But it’s high time that Ms. Kinhan got around to making a “solo” album – one where the focus is on her own singing and writing and interpretation. Continue reading →
