Daniel D Reitz - Sonic Intuition

Daniel D Reitz -||- Sonic Intuition – [Daniel D Reitz, 2010]

From sudden inspiration, to a quiet lyrical meditation, “Sonic Intuition” is a record that strives to be honest. The musicians were encouraged to be open and free, while at the same time playing intimately and cohesively. All of the recordings were single-takes with no tracking or re-recordings. The music needed to be live and in the moment, and the true spirit of the compositions came alive through this process. The title of the album was more of a creed to create by: let your intuition lead you, and in that way your artistry will remain timeless.

This artist’s debut album captures the essence of sudden inspiration through weaving melodies, modal explorations, and odd-metered funk arrangements that are both captivating as well as innovative and progressive.

EMI’s Blue Note Records has signed jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader Ambrose Akinmusire. The 28 year-old winner of the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition will head into the studio this Fall to record his major label debut with labelmate Jason Moran as co-producer.

“Mr. Akinmusire is among the latest to put together a quintet that seems destined for much wider recognition,” recently wrote critic Ben Ratliff in The New York Times. “It’s limber, straight-ahead jazz with mystery and pop instincts that gets around most of the old, pervasive mainstream influences, both of trumpet playing and bandleading.” Continue reading →

Naima - Buscas

Naima -||- Buscas – [MilanaBonita, 2010]

Naima mixes the complexity of jazz with popular music. It manages to closer to the public a type of music with as many nuances as jazz has, with the help of familiar melodies and some pop-rock anthems.

The band consists of a tenor sax, drums, piano and double bass, a classic quartet with an electronic sound that is relevant for today’s scene.

Naima works on different intensities, making a journey out of each song. A journey through Mediterranean villages, heading north in search of sounds that surround us with warmth as if we were in a Scandinavian city. Naima has just released its second album, Buscas? (“Are you looking for …?”), featuring Mario Rossy on the double bass. The album has 7 original tracks, and 2 cover versions from Depeche Mode and The Smiths.
