Tim Warfield - A Sentimental Journey

Tim Warfield -||- A Sentimental Journey – [Criss Cross, 2010]

On his sixth Criss Cross leader date, saxophonist Tim Warfield reconvenes his bandmates – trumpeter extraordinaire Terell Stafford, Hammond B3 master Pat Bianchi, and Joey de Francesco’s drummer-of-choice Byron Landham – from the 2007 date One For Shirley for an informed, soulful exploration of American songbook repertoire.

A life-long Pennsylvanian, Warfield learned how to navigate such terrain during a long association with the legendary Philadelphia keyboardist Shirley Scott. He applies those lessons to great effect, unfailingly channeling technical derring-do towards imperatives of emotional expression and swing.

Tobias Preisig - Flowing Mood

Tobias Preisig -||- Flowing Mood [Obliqsound, 2010]

Preisig is far from being unknown in his home country of Switzerland, and is part of a movement coming about on the European jazz scene — a new generation of young musicians coming from Zurich who have been developing a new sound in jazz, including pianist Colin Vallon and ECM recording artist Nik Bärtsch. Tobi Preisig and his outstanding band complete the group of rising stars from Zurich, with “Flowing Mood” highlighting the talents of pianist and Sony Music recording artist Stefan Rusconi, bassist Andre’ Pousatz, and drummer Michi Stultz. Preisig explains.

With “Flowing Mood“, Preisig has formed a flexible body of sound, switching between soothing silence and explosive bursts. Preisig and his violin take us on a journey of dramatic landscapes and cozy ambiances, making us sigh, sing and celebrate.

“The accuracy of chamber music, the agility of jazz and the lightness of pop” – Jazz ‘n’ More
“An exceptional talent” – Neue Zürcher
“Sensational” – Tages-Anzeiger

DL Media is proud to announce that multi-Grammy Award winning drummer extraordinaire, improvisational composer, and leader of a cutting edge Cuban-born, Italian-based quartet, Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez, will be awarded with an Honorary Doctor of Music Degree from Berklee College of Music on Thursday, July 15 in recognition of his extraordinary musicianship and many career achievements. The honorary degree will be presented on the main stage of the Umbria Jazz Festival in Perugia, Italy by Berklee’s vice president, Larry Monroe.

Berklee, the world’s largest college of music, was founded on two revolutionary ideas: that musicianship could be taught through the music of the time; and that their students needed practical, professional skills for successful, sustainable music careers. Through the years, Berklee has presented doctorate degrees to many important figures who embodied the spirit of their mission, including luminaries such as Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, William “Count” Basie, Quincy Jones, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Tito Puente, Chick Corea, and many others.
