With the Labor Day Weekend just around the corner it’s great to come acquainted with some new music. In fact, recently a good friend pointed me to this fabulous recording by the legendary saxophonist Charles Lloyd. If you will, check it out this incredible ensemble and let me know what you think about it? —Rob Young | The Urban Flux

Charles Lloyd Quartet - Rado de Nube (Live) ECM

Charles Lloyd Quartet -][- Rabo de Nube – Live – [ECM, 2008]

At age 70 Charles Lloyd has delivered the best performance of his career. However, credit for this fantastic live set belongs to all performers on this group not just Lloyd. Each performer (Jason Moran on piano, Eric Harland on drums, Rueben Rogers on bass) play with telepathic communication and flawless execution on this live set recorded in Europe in 2007. The music at times reminds one of Miles Davis’ mid 60’s work, Coltrane’s mid 60’s work, and on some tracks pay tribute to Thelonious Monk. The sound quality of the set is beyond perfect. Each musician’s instrument can be heard with crystal clear accuracy. If a pin dropped on the stage, you would have heard it.

While I’ve grown to expect outstanding performances from Lloyd, Moran, and Harland I was not familiar with bassist Rueben Rogers before listening to this set. I have to say I could not have been more impressed in my first listen of his work. Throughout the set Rogers delivers tight walking bass lines that fit perfectly and also has many brilliant solos. This will be on everyone’s list of the best albums for 2008 and will top many listeners’ list for top album of the year. —Scott Williams | Amazon.com

Charlie Hunter - Public Domain

Charlie is set to release his second solo outing! Not since Solo Eight-String Guitar a decade ago has Charlie made a recording of just him and his guitar. This time, he’s down to 7-strings and is performing songs that are all public domain. The songs were all hand-picked by Charlie’s grandfather! “I was into doing a solo record for some time and just hit on the public domain idea.

I figured I’d ask someone who actually remembered the tunes from his youth: My grandfather, Sidney Greenman. He was born in 1911 (yep, he’s 99). He helped pick the tunes for me. I recorded this in a day at The Bunker Studio in Brooklyn. Everything is live, there is no editing. Hope you like.”

The aptly titled album Public Domain will be released on September 14th on iTunes and all major digital distribution retailers.

Florian Ross -][- MECHANISM – [Pirouet Records, 2010]

Florian Ross is not just a pianist; he is also a composer and a shaper of sounds. As such he has made a name for himself throughout Europe over the last decade. His creativity and virtuosity has earned Ross, who was born in Pforzheim, Germany in 1972, numerous honors, including first prize at the Danish Radio Big Band’s Thad Jones competition, and in 2006 he received the WDR’s (West German Radio) jazz prize for composition. Germany’s Goethe Institute sent him as exemplary cultural export to Asia, South Africa, and Central America. And he teaches at renowned music conservatories in six German cities.

Florian Ross is a masterful arranger, as he has a deep understanding of how to combine the various instruments into unusually sophisticated voicings. Whether for the Vancouver Jazz Orchestra, the BMI Jazz Orchestra, or the Metropole Orkest, when it is about transforming large bodies of sound into lean polychromatic music, then Florian Ross is the one to call.

This is his first CD as solo pianist and his first recording on Pirouet Records.
