Alexis Cuadrado - Noneto Ibérico

Brooklyn Jazz Underground Records proudly announces the release of Noneto Ibérico, the epic new recording from bassist, composer, and co-founder of BJURecords, Alexis Cuadrado. Noneto Ibérico is Cuadrado’s fourth CD as a leader and the follow up to his much-lauded recording, Puzzles. “Noneto Ibérico”, which saw its successful premiere in October, 2009 at NYC’s Jazz Gallery, is a nine-movement piece performed by nine musicians, blending the traditional song forms of Spanish Flamenco music with the contemporary improvised music idiom, creating a unique and groundbreaking genre that goes a step beyond previous blends of flamenco and jazz. Noneto Ibérico will be released on February 15, 2011.

Besides Mr. Cuadrado on double bass, the ensemble featured on Noneto Ibérico includes some of the most outstanding jazz musicians on the New York scene: Avishai Cohen on trumpet, Loren Stillman on saxophones, Alan Ferber on trombone, Brad Shepik on guitar, Dan Tepfer on piano and Mark Ferber on drums, with the special collaboration of two of the most exceptional musicians in Spain that have broken molds, and are renowned internationally for blending jazz with Flamenco, Perico Sambeat on saxophone and Marc Miralta on percussion. Together they construct a bridge that brings the composer’s cultural legacy to bear on American jazz, thus enlightening the contemporary musical experience. Continue reading →

GUITARIST KEVIN EUBANKS – ZEN FOOD,
SET FOR NOVEMBER 23 RELEASE ON MACK AVENUE RECORDS

KEVIN EUBANKS - ZEN FOOD (Mack Avenue Debut)

Kevin Eubanks -][- Zen Food – [Mack Avenue Records, 11/23/2010]

For nearly two decades, the world at large knew precisely where to find the acclaimed guitarist Kevin Eubanks. For five nights a week, Eubanks was cranking up the band and issuing steamy solos as music director on NBC’s “Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” In spring of 2010, after 18 years on the job, Eubanks decided to move on, although retirement was the last thing on his mind. That much is clearly stated in potent musical terms on Zen Food, his first recording for the Mack Avenue label.

ALBUM SERVES AS HIS LABEL DEBUT AND
FIRST PROJECT SINCE DEPARTING THE TONIGHT SHOW

Listen to an exclusive streaming track from the album

Zen Food is a statement of purpose for a guitarist who, in the 15 years before landing his coveted gig in Burbank, built a reputation as one of the more adventurous and anti-ism guitarists. In fact, Eubanks has been tending his personal musical muse for years, working on material and honing his band in Los Angeles–“after work” at the famed Baked Potato. Continue reading →

April Harrison

Greetings jazz and art aficionados, as always what a joy it is to be in the mist of remarkable people. I declare, with Thanksgiving just a few days away I’m reminded of the amazing year of immeasurable challenges that we’ve had to encounter and for that matter still going through in this country and globally. Even still, regardless of these barriers, frustrations and unmet desires I’ve personally faced I’m indeed thankful for another gratifying chapter in my life as I continue to pray diligently for those who are in need regardless of ethnicity or creed.

Today, I’m enthralled once more to feature another magnificent piece of art by April Harrison from her breath taking body of work on the pages of The Urban Flux. At your leisure, please visit the fascinating online gallery by this talented South Carolina native. —Rob Young

William Shakespeare’s work defined the scope and depth of English and world literature in a way that remains immediate and powerful to this day, 400 years after they were written; similarly, Duke Ellington’s work outlined what American music could become and laid out the key elements that still define jazz. In 1957, Ellington and collaborator Billy Strayhorn were invited by the Stratford (Ontario) Shakespeare Festival to compose music in tribute to Shakespeare. They came up with Such Sweet Thunder, which yielded, among other pieces, the poignant portrait of Romeo and Juliet, “Star Crossed Lovers.” Continue reading →
