KJ Denhert - ALBUM No.9

KJ Denhert -][- ALBUM No.9 – [Motema Music, 2010]

With a genre-transcending sound that she calls “Urban Folk & Jazz”, award-winning singer-songwriter KJ Denhert has been making audiences laugh, dance and cry for over three decades. She’s self-produced eight records, appeared at scores of festivals and, since 1998, held ongoing residencies at The 55 Bar in NYC and The Baz Bar in St. Barth’s. Since 2006, KJ has also been a six time artist-in-residence at the Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy.

This fall marked the release of her new CD, a live recording entitled, KJ Denhert: Dal Vivo a Umbria Jazz. “The title translates to ‘Live at Umbria Jazz’, but it sounds so much sexier spoken in Italian. I call it “Dal Vivo” for short,” KJ remarks in her notably precise Italian accent.

Performing Songwriter magazine was among the first to herald KJ’s talents, stating, “KJ Denhert is so full of a love for life that you hear it in her voice, her lyrics and the exuberant beats of her songs.”

Hristo Vitchev Quartet -][- SONG FOR MESSAMBRIA – [First Orbit Sounds Music, 2009]

The Hristo Vitchev Quartet is an impressionistic jazz ensemble lead by Bulgarian modern jazz guitarist Hristo Vitchev. Residing in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1998, Hristo has performed with some of the premier musicians in the region and has toured nationally and internationally with a wide variety of formations. The quartet was formed in late 2008 with the goal of showcasing Hristo Vitchev’s completely unique voice as a composer, featuring Brazilian pianist Weber Iago, drummer extraordinaire Joe De Rose, and one of the most original bassist in Northern California; Dan Robbins.

Their debut record “Song for Messambria” presents a unique blend of modern jazz (ECM), classical, and Brazilian textures, and showcases the completely unique and masterful interpretation of the jazz idiom by each one of its members. The album received outstanding reviews by the international jazz community and it was selected as one of the six best jazz records of 2009 by E-Jazz News. Hristo Vitchev has been featured in jazz publications all around the world and his music is being played in hundreds of radio stations.

Turtle Island Quartet - A LOVE SUPREME (The Legacy of John Coltrane)

The Turtle Island Quartet -][- A LOVE SUPREME: The Legacy of John Coltrane – [Telarc, 2006]

A Love Supreme: The Legacy of John Coltrane explores places where jazz and classical sensibilities converge.

Some music is so finely crafted that the genre in which it is conceived becomes irrelevant to the music itself. Such was the case with much of the work of saxophonist John Coltrane – an artist commonly regarded as a jazz composer, but one whose musical vision transcends the boundaries of what is considered jazz and what is not. Four decades after his death, Coltrane continues to inspire musicians of every perspective – not just jazz players, but any composer or performer who recognizes and respects the inherently exploratory and universal nature of music.

The Turtle Island Quartet – violinist David Balakrishnan, cellist Mark Summer, violinist Evan Price and violist Mads Tolling – are among those artists who see this bigger picture. A Love Supreme: The Legacy of John Coltrane is Turtle Island’s interpretation of music written by – or otherwise reflective of – the 20th century jazz master. The album is set for release on March 27, 2007. —Concord Music Group
