Paula Prophet - FROM ME TO YOU

Paula Prophet -][- FROM ME TO YOU – [Pacific Coast Jazz, 2010]

If the future could have been predicted then twenty year singing veteran, Paula Prophet, was given the perfect name. She is truly a “prophet” by spreading the passion of music through her original lyrics and compositions along with a voice that has the power to awaken the spirit. From the first note of her clear, fervent sound it is easy to become a believer in this soulful messenger. Having performed in a wide variety of bands covering several musical genres, including r&b, doo-wap, rock, pop, jazz standards and contemporary/fusion, her vocal interpretations reflect a special blend of personal expression influenced by a broad range of professional experience. “I love writing and singing songs that inspire emotional growth or helping people to push though tough times,” commented Paula. Her debut CD, to be released in 2010, is a testament to her amazing talent as a published songwriter and lyricist. —Paula Prophet.com

The 2011 Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air Portland Jazz Festival Presented by US Bank has received two NEA grants. PDX Jazz has been awarded a Jazz Masters Live grant and Challenge America Fast-Track grant.

National Endowment For The Arts

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) created the Jazz Masters Live grant to help bring outstanding jazz musicians, writers, producers, and scholars to communities across the nation through NEA Jazz Masters Live. In cooperation with Arts Midwest, these NEA Jazz Masters Live grants support performance and educational activities featuring NEA Jazz Masters, recipients of the nation’s highest honor in jazz. The program celebrates these living legends who have made exceptional contributions to the advancement of jazz and offers audiences the unique opportunity to share the artists’ expertise in performances, master classes, clinics, lectures, and short term residencies. “Live interactions between musicians and audiences are essential to jazz,” said NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman.

NEA Jazz Master and acclaimed pianist, Randy Weston, will open the 2011 Portland Jazz Festival on February 18 at the Winningstad Theatre with an evening of solo jazz piano. He will also lead a workshop for Portland State University students and participate in the festival’s “Jazz Conversation” series, hosted by Marty Hughley. Weston will be appearing in support of his most recent album, The Story Teller, available through Motema Music, and his recently released autobiography, African Rhythms, available through Duke University Press. Bassist KERMIT DRISCOLL

One thing’s certain: it was definitely worth the wait. Kermit Driscoll has been a remarkable bassist and inspired sideman for the last 30 years, but he’s never released an album of his own. Reveille, a program of kaleidoscopic funk, experimental abstractions, and fetching intricacies, rectifies that. It is an achievement that lets the world know Driscoll now wears another hat as well: that of a cagey bandleader.

Reveille’s star-studded quartet united for only a day, but it performs like a group that’s worked together for ages – which in some ways it indeed has. Driscoll and guitarist Bill Frisell are longtime partners. The pair met on the first day of classes at the Berklee College of Music during the mid-‘70s. During that Boston stint, they also connected with drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, the master percussionist who went on to share the stage with everyone from Sting to Frank Zappa to Jeff Beck. (The three played in a New England lounge band, and Driscoll says that somewhere there’s a picture of them sporting their orange disco suits.) Rounding out the Reveille ensemble is pianist Kris Davis, an insightful improviser who’s currently garnering critical acclaim on the New York jazz scene. Under Driscoll’s guidance, this foursome connects on a deep level, making music that blends keenly individual approaches with a palpable sense of sharing. Continue reading →

John Flanders & Double Helix - THE GO BETWEEN

John Flanders & Double Helix -][- THE GO BETWEEN – [Squidisc Records, 2011]

John is a multi-talented woodwind player, whose main instrument is tenor/soprano sax, but also utilizes alto sax, plenty of flute, and clarinet and bass clarinet on his recordings. His cds consist of fun high energy original jazz compositions, jaunting from swing, to Latin, funk, fusion and beyond. He always has top guest artist featured on the discs, from players like Alex Acuna, to Mike Miller, Mitchel Forman, Will Lee and more.

John has performed with Solomon Burke, Billy Preston, The Temptations, Rodney Dangerfield, Ben Folds, countless regional bands and the Utah Symphony. His influences come from Weather Report, Chick Corea, The Yellowjackets, Bob Berg, Micheal Brecker, Pat Metheny, and on…

His new disc, “The Go Between”, is tightly produced, and relies heavily on the grand piano and trombone, alongside the rich sax lines and sectional melodies. It also has plenty of percussion, and even some English horn for a wide but cohesive adventure of songs and styles. —CDBaby
