Hannes De Kassian Trio - 3

Hannes De Kassian Trio -][- 3 – [Hannes De Kassian Trio, 2009]

Hannes De Kassian’s music is a process of continual discovery and reinvention. For the Austrian-born, New York–based guitarist and composer, making music is the ongoing search to mine the spiritual, to delve deeper and deeper into our humanity, especially in the face of an overwhelmingly technological world. On his new album, Hannes De Kassian Trio “3,” De Kassian has stripped his music down to its bare essential, emerging with a work that is authentic, complex and original.

Released in 2009, the aptly named “3 “ is Hannes De Kassian’s third CD, and his second foray into a trio. Featuring Gene Torres on bass and Joris Dudli on drums, the self-produced album is a product of De Kassian’s sharpened vision a fusion of his European roots with funk-infused jazz.

That fusion is present in the album’s opening track, “125 Jive.” De Kassian’s guitar weaves masterfully with Torres’s bottom-heavy bass. Dudli punctuates the music propulsively, pushing the action, a heady dose of jazz and funk. “I live in Harlem,” De Kassian explains, “and I wanted ‘125 Jive’ to have that kind of energy and buzz.”

“Undercurrent” has an off beat sensibility – ethereal in tone, the song shows De Kassian’s comfort in playing with more open forms. “It’s not your regular spin of eight bars to a melody,” De Kassian says. “It’s more like painting a soundscape.”

James Weidman - THREE WORLDS

James Weidman -][- THREE WORLDS – [James Weidman, 2009]

A valued and talented pianist, James Weidman has been a sideman and accompanist in many settings over the past 20 years; from Abbey Lincoln and Steve Coleman to Kevin Mahogany and Joe Lovano. He has also proven to be an increasingly significant bandleader and composer. His most recent CD, Three Worlds, is unquestionably his most ambitious recording to date.

On Three Worlds, Weidman performs nine of his originals plus the traditional “Joshua Fit The Battle Of Jericho” with his trio including Francisco Mela on drums and Brad Jones on bass. On other tracks, Weidman is found in varying configurations of quartet on two selections (with the addition of vibraphonist Jay Hoggard) and a particularly adventurous quintet on five selections (with trombonist Ray Anderson and multi-reedist Marty Ehrlich; sans Hoggard). Le Boeuf Brothers - HOUSE WITHOUT A DOOR

Le Boeuf Brothers -][- HOUSE WITHOUT A DOOR – [Le Boeuf Brothers, 2009]

Remy and Pascal Le Boeuf (saxophone and piano) are part of a growing New York jazz scene characterized by odd time signatures, alternative rock, and the influences of artists such as Radiohead, Brian Blade and Kurt Rosenwinkel. What makes the 22-year-old Le Boeuf Brothers sparkle among other young jazz musicians is their uncanny ability to communicate with each other using their own secret musical language. This isn’t surprising when you discover that Pascal and Remy Le Boeuf are identical twins.

In their short musical career, the Le Boeuf Brothers (pronounced “le buff”) have garnered an impressive tally of national and international awards and accomplishments, the most notable being the ASCAP/IAJE Commission honoring Quincy Jones, which premiered at the 2004 IAJE conference and featured tenor saxophonist Chris Potter. The Le Boeuf Brothers have also received awards from Downbeat Magazine, the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts, and dominated the 2006 Independent Music Awards, winning Best Jazz Album and Best Jazz Song for their prior release “Migration”.
