Quamon Fowler -][- A SOUL’S CRY – [Core Instrumental Music, 2010]

FRESH, NEW, SOULFUL Original Music from Quamon Fowler on tenor sax & ewi along with the ENERGETIC DC based jazz trio, The Young Lions. Every song you can feel the joy and the clean spirit of the music.

Quamon Fowler is a native of Fort Worth, Texas. He started his musical journey on the tenor saxophone at the age of twelve and has been composing music since he was fifteen. While attending O.D. Wyatt High School, he placed first in the NAACP ACT-SO competition in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1996 and Atlanta, Georgia in 1998. He also earned first chair tenor saxophone in the All-State Jazz Ensemble in 1998. After graduating from Wyatt, Quamon attended Weatherford College where he was under the direction of jazz guitarist Tom Burchill.

A year later, Quamon felt he needed to deepen his music studies. He decided to attend Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Here, he studied with world-renowned clarinetist Alvin Batiste. By the end of July 2000, Quamon released his first independent CD project entitled Introducing Quamon Fowler. In this album, Quamon combined straight-ahead jazz and soul in order to create a unique sound. —BIOGRAPHY

Chantale Gagné - WISDOM OF THE WATER

Chantale Gagné -][- WISDOM OF THE WATER – [Chantale Gagné, 2010]

A native of Quebec, Canada, jazz pianist Chantale Gagné began studying music at the age of 8. At 15, the piano becomes Chantale’s passion.

From 1997 to 1999, she studied jazz piano with James Gelfand at College Marie-Victorin in Montreal, followed by 4 years at McGill University where she received her degree in “Jazz Piano Performance”.

In 2005, Chantale met famous pianist Kenny Barron and although she studied with him for a short period of time, this encounter proved to be so inspiring to Chantale both as a pianist and composer that she realized jazz had become her deepest calling.

For the past years, Chantale has been busy performing in Canada, U.S. and Europe from trio, quartet to piano solo and big bands.

Silent Strength her self-produced debut recording album with Peter Washington on bass and Lewis Nash on drums, has been met with great reviews and features many of her original compositions. Continue reading →

Blackman, Murray, Russo - TURNING POINT

Blackman, Murray, Russo -][- TURNING POINT – [Top Floor Studios, 2010]

A wonderful blend of original, creative, and fresh modern jazz featuring saxophonist Donny McCaslin! Half original material from the pianist and the rest are covers of Peter Gabriel-Beatles-Brahms et. al

Staples around the thriving Baltimore/Washington D.C. jazz scene for 20 years, Blackman Murray Russo trio has captured a delightfully fresh and well-executed musical product. Recorded at the famed Bennett Studios in NJ and featuring modern horn great Donny McCaslin, they explore mostly the unique musical approach of the pianist, Alan Blackman. His originals occupy almost half of the musical ground here, and they are varied in scope and interesting from both a rhythmic and harmonic vantage point. From the almost middle eastern opening version of a Brahms Waltz through the groovy standard(with some nice new chords) I’ve Never Been in Love to a 9/4 fender rhodes inflected tour de force on You’ve Changed, this band is tight and the solos are at a very accomplished and individual level. Highly recommended if you are tired of boring smooth jazz and bored with tired traditional swing. –CDBaby | Album Notes
