PORTLAND JAZZ FESTIVAL-2011

SFJAZZ Collective and Joshua Redman are set to perform at the 2011 Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air Portland Jazz Festival Presented by US Bank. The eight-piece all-star ensemble, SFJAZZ Collective, will present the world-premiere of repertoire from “SFJAZZ Collective Plays Stevie Wonder” on Saturday, February 26 at 7:30pm. Joshua Redman – the founder and former leader of the SFJAZZ Collective – will showcase his quartet on Sunday, February 27 at 2pm. Both performances will take place at the Newmark Theatre (inside the PCPA’s Antoinette Hatfield Hall).

SFJAZZ Collective Band

SFJAZZ Collective annually looks back and re-arranges famous compositions of jazz masters from Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane to Herbie Hancock and McCoy Tyner. Featuring alto saxophonist Miguel Zenón, tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, trumpeter Avishai Cohen, trombonist Robin Eubanks, vibraphonist Stefon Harris, pianist Edward Simon, bassist Matt Penman, and drummer Eric Harland, the ensemble’s performance will debut new material: “SFJAZZ Collective Plays Stevie Wonder.” A Motown Records star at age 11, Stevie released a string of classic albums in the 1970s that fused elements of his roots from the soul music scene in Detroit with R&B, jazz, and reggae. The Collective will perform at the Newmark Theater on Saturday, February 26 at 7:30pm.

Joshua Redman

Redman, who originally founded and led the SFJAZZ Collective, is one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists to have emerged in the decade of the 1990s. The son of legendary African American saxophonist Dewey Redman and Jewish American dancer Renee Shedroff, he has performed with such esteemed artists as Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, and Brad Mehldau, as well as a new working quartet, “James Farm,” which infuses traditional acoustic jazz quartet instrumentation with a progressive attitude and modern sound. In Portland, Redman will showcase his storied group – the “Joshua Redman Quartet” – featuring pianist Aaron Goldberg and SFJAZZ Collective rhythm section, bassist Penman and drummer Harland. Redman will perform at the Newmark Theater on Sunday, February 27 at 2pm.

Adam Rogers - ALLEGORY

Adam Rogers -][- ALLEGORY – [Criss Cross, 2009]

The past few years have seen a handful of young, talented, up-and-coming guitarists emerge onto the scene. From Kurt Rosenwinkel’s altered tunings and pianistic approach to David Gilmore’s M-BASE style to Ben Monder’s…well…yeah, each has their own style. Among these artists, Adam Rogers should also take his place as an artist on the rise. Displaying a classical technique, a hard swinging linear-approach, and the ability to play with artists ranging from Michael Brecker and the Mingus Big Band to Norah Jones, Rogers is now beginning to show off his talents as a leader. Allegory is Rogers’ sophmore release and features the same line up as his debut Art of the Invisible (Ed Simon, Scott Colley, and Clarence Penn) along with the addition of the firey tenor Chris Potter.

The album boasts 10 compositions from the pen of Rogers and range stylistically from the “necessary” blues (Purpose), to neo-classical tone poems (Was), and more rockish tunes (Ghengis). The playing throughout the album is jaw dropping (i.e. Potters solo on Confluence…MERCY!), however Rogers’ compositions somtimes seem overly complex and occaisionally not memorable. That being said for the 2nd album by a young guitarist on the rise, its great! Adam, if you ever want to give a 16-year old guitarist a lesson, hit me up man! —Snocitus | Reviewer/Amazon

Tony Allen

Tony Allen

Born in Lagos, Nigeria in 1940, of mixed Nigerian and Ghanaian parentage, Tony Allen taught himself to play by listening to records made by the American jazz drummers Art Blakey and Max Roach. He began working as a professional musician in 1960, gigging around Lagos and variously playing highlife and jazz. Today living in Paris, Allen has long been acknowledged as Africa’s finest kit drummer and one of it’s most influential musicians, the man who with Fela Anikulapo Kuti created Afrobeat – the hard driving, James Brown funk-infused, and politically engaged style which became such a dominant force in African music and whose influence continues to spread today.

Special guest Amp Fiddler
Joseph “Amp” Fiddler, originally a keyboardist from Detroit, is a funk and soul musician who has worked with Enchantment, the Dramatics, George Clinton, Moodyman, Jamiroquai, The Brand New Heavies, Fishbone and Maxwell. Continue reading →

“The Dead Kenny Gs pinball between styles: Afro-pop, Balkan, Klezmer, pocket funk lashed to Middle Eastern modality…feverish.” – New York Times

The Dead Kenny Gs - Operation Long Leash

Combustible punk jazz trio, The Dead Kenny Gs, featuring saxophonist Skerik, bassist Brad Houser and drummer/percussionist/vibraphonist Mike Dillon, have announced the release of Operation Long Leash due March 15 on Royal Potato Family. Recorded in December at Stone Gossard’s Studio Litho in Seattle with engineer Randall Dunn (Cave Singers, Black Mountain, Boris), the band conceived the majority of the material while on the road last summer with Primus, Gogol Bordello and Garage A Trois. The release of Operation Long Leash is surrounded by a 15-date tour that begins in New Orleans and heads north up the East Coast.

If the moniker Dead Kenny Gs doesn’t say it all at first glance, an initial listen to the latest album quickly makes their intentions clear. The trio is committed to musical subversion of the highest order. Exploring a muso obsession of musical styles and sonic colors, The Dead Kenny Gs have both the courage and the chops to realize their wildest aural fantasies. One moment they draw inspiration from punk legends The Minutemen, while the next finds them embracing the spirit of jazz giant Rahsaan Roland Kirk, and still another the influence of indie rock progenitors Deerhoof; yet always remaining purely DKGs. It’s not just music informing the band’s voice either, but an obsession with political conspiracy in American history. The album’s title, Operation Long Leash, comes from the clandestine CIA operation in the late ‘40s to fund Abstract Expressionism as a means for Western culture to undermine the conformist ideals of the Soviet Union during the early years of the Cold War.
