Community Service and Church Partners Who Support Live Jazz

The 2011 Alaska Airlines/Horizon Air Portland Jazz Festival Presented by U.S. Bank boasts over 125 shows and covering a 20 day period, is set to commence Friday, February 18 through Sunday, February 27. In addition to headline attractions performing inside the PCPA at the Newmark and Winningstad Theatre’s, The Crystal Ballroom and The Alberta Rose Theatre, this year’s 8th annual festival has partnered with 21 multi-cultural venues all across the city in support of this year’s theme: Bridges and Boundaries: Jewish & African Americans Playing Jazz.

Hotel partners featuring live jazz include: The Cleaners at the Ace Hotel, Benson Hotel, Heathman Hotel, Hotel Fifty, Nel Centro at the Hotel Modera, Hotel Monaco, Red Lion Portland Convention Center and The Riverplace Hotel.

Club settings include: The Art Bar, Blue Monk, Brasserie Montmartre, Tony Starlight’s and Wilf’s.

Restaurant partners include: Flying Cat, Rogue Distillery & Public House, and West Café.

Additionally, Congregation Beth Israel, The First Congressional United Church of Christ of Portland, The Mission Theatre, and Self Enhancement Institute (SEI) are playing an active role in helping to spread the jazz gospel.

This year’s Jam Session returns to The Cleaners and will be hosted by Ben Darwish and for the first time presented by KMHD, the official jazz festival radio sponsor. Program Director Matt Fleeger will be on hand to help with the 12 midnight to 2:00AM festivities on Friday, February 25 and Saturday, February 26.

Portland’s largest youth jazz organization, Portland Youth Jazz Orchestra (PYJO) will be the beneficiary of a concert on Sunday, February 20 featuring Trombone 8 and the Medler Big Band. The benefit concert will be held at the Red Lion Convention Center at 3:30 p.m., and will also feature a group of young musicians from PYJO. The concert is one of several Portland Jazz Festival concerts that will feature PYJO musicians.

Jazz brunches go together like bacon and eggs as well as gospel and klezmer. Last year’s Gospel Brunch featuring the SEI Sounds of Soul Choir sold out and this year’s event is also at capacity. This wildly swinging and grooving event has become a N. Portland Institution. Congregation Beth Israel links to the festival theme with a Klezmer brunch featuring Klezmocracy at 11:00AM on Sunday February 27. Other jazz themed brunches around town on February 27 at 11:00AM include, Ramsey Embick at Brasserie Montmartre (which holds a weekly brunch) and Brooklyn Street Jazz at Nel Centro at Hotel Modera.
