Gregory Porter
Fresh off his GRAMMY nomination, Gregory Porter’s debut album “Water” continues to gain new fans. One such fan is Tokyo Dawn’s Opolopo who has just posted his house-flavored “kick & bass rerub” of Porter’s “1960 What?”
The 12-minute original, “1960 What?” is Water’s most political song which recalls the heyday of soul music. It’s lyrically very apt given the revolutions going on at the moment around the world. It was inspired in part by Kamau Kenyatta’s stories of life in Detroit and by the 1963 assassination of Martin Luther King, as well as Porters’s own experiences growing up in Los Angeles.
