Sean Jones - No Need For Words

As we’ve all been told, birds do it, bees do it – but anyone who’s actually gone to the trouble of falling in love knows that it’s a lot more complicated when humans get involved. Which can make the reality of relationships a bit disappointing for those weaned on a steady diet of radio-friendly love songs, but can also provide a much richer experience than it’s possible to describe in a couple of verses and a chorus.

LISTEN TO EXCLUSIVE STREAMING TRACKS FROM NO NEED FOR WORDS

As has become evident over the course of his five previous albums, Sean Jones is particularly adept at plumbing complex emotional depths through his trumpet playing and composing.

So when he set his mind to recording a set of love songs, it should come as no surprise that he delved into the evocative nuances of love rather than the more obvious boys-meets-girl, boy-loses-girl generalities. Continue reading →

The Cookers - Cast The First Stone

Experience counts, especially in jazz. The more time musicians spend interpreting tunes and interacting with others, the more articulation an audience can expect. You can hear the fruits of such work in the expressive language the Cookers bring to the material on Cast the First Stone. Here’s a group of veteran improvisers approaching their current songbook with both ardor and eloquence.

Billy Harper, Cecil McBee, George Cables, Eddie Henderson, and Billy Hart all came up in the heady era of the mid ’60s. It was a period that found the dimensions of hard bop morphing from their original designs, and each these guys helped facilitate the process. David Weiss and Craig Handy, from a more recent generation and the youngest members of the band, are experts in this forthright lingo as well. Their feisty solos parallel those of their elders. Together, the septet throws a mighty punch.

“There’s no doubt that these guys hit it hard,” says Weiss. “Unquestionably that’s the signature of the band.” The trumpeter produced Cast the First Stone; he’s also the group’s straw boss. “I love Warriors, our previous disc, but some considered it a kinder and gentler Cookers record. This one has a great balance. There’s pretty stuff, smart stuff, and tough stuff – a few really rugged pieces in fact. It’s one of those records that grabs you from the first note and doesn’t let go.” Continue reading →

Nadav Remez, SO FAR

Guitarist/composer Nadav Remez – originally from Israel, now living in Brooklyn, NY, is “one of the best recent discoveries of the jazz scene,” (L’Est Republicain). His music, an intriguing blend of modern jazz, alternative rock, and Jewish folk music, is drawing attention from fans and critics worldwide. The Berklee and New England Conservatory alumni’s debut recording, So Far, captures a magical performance by Remez and his band of Shai Maestro, James Wylie, Steve Brickman, Avri Borochov, Ziv Ravitz, and special guest Itamar Borochov, in an adventurous musical journey through eight new originals, and a brilliant arrangement of a traditional Jewish melody, “Lecha Dodi”. So Far will be released on Brooklyn Jazz Underground Records on April 26.

The title track “So Far” is an ensemble piece with no solos, but focused rather on introducing the voices of the band, and having them fully expressed in this piece of music. The composition serves as the overture, or centerpiece, for the entire recording as it contains various melodic, harmonic and rhythmic elements from the rest of the tunes. So Far continues with “Pinchas”, inspired by “the jazz-rock-folk writing approach of drummers Eric Harland and Brian Blade”, said Remez, and the first tune on the CD featuring extended improvisations by pianist Shai Maestro and Remez. On “Pinchas”, and the rest of the recording, the band reveals its Fellowship-ness with splendid results. “Inner Peace” began humbly as a composition exercise but quickly morphed into a tune worthy of being on the album. The first section of the tune shares the chordal structure of one of Joe Henderson’s most revered compositions, “Inner Urge”, and also some of the cathartic energy from much of mid-1960s jazz. “Untitled” begins the “B-side” of the album so to speak, offering an act two that features more intense playing. The traditional Jewish song, “Lecha Dodi”, sung in synagogues around the world on Friday nights to welcome the Sabbath, is re-imagined by Remez by bringing together two variations on the melody with the quarter-tone improvisations from guest trumpeter Itamar Borochov and saxophonist James Wylie.
