LISTEN TO EXCLUSIVE STREAMING TRACKS FROM COMMON GROUND

On Gary Burton’s debut release on Mack Avenue Records, Common Ground, the Grammy-winning pioneer of the four-mallet technique of playing the vibes is not only delivering his first studio album since 2005, but is also introducing his latest band. Known as the New Gary Burton Quartet, the group is comprised of guitarist Julian Lage, bassist Scott Colley and drummer Antonio Sanchez. Common Ground features 10 tunes, including six remarkable originals by quartet members as well as two impressive numbers by pianist Vadim Neselovskyi (a former Burton band member), a gem from the Keith Jarrett songbook and an intriguing arrangement of the standard “My Funny Valentine,” spotlighting Lage.

Well-known throughout his five-decade career for his quartets (beginning with his 1967 group featuring Larry Coryell, Roy Haynes and Steve Swallow), Burton is returning to the configuration for the first time since the mid-’90s. He expresses great enthusiasm for the new band’s alchemy. Continue reading →

“an excellent new quartet that will have its first album out next month. The band played through irregular grooves beautifully. . . . strong and controlled . . .” – The New York Times
(on The Music Band’s performance at The 2011 Winter Jazzfest)

Shane Endsley and The Music Band - Then The Other

” . . . a joyous tribute to music – jazz and otherwise” – All About Jazz
(on The Music Band’s performance at The 2011 Winter Jazzfest)

“Jazz keeps slowly widening, and the young trumpeter Shane Endsley is working calmly and effectively at the perimeter.” – The New York Times

On May 4 at The Cornelia Street Cafe, Shane Endsley celebrates the release of his new recording on Kneebody’s new label, Low Electrical Records, Shane Endsley and The Music Band – Then The Other. Endsley will be appearing with Craig Taborn (piano), Matt Brewer (bass), and Nate Wood (drums).

In addition to his work with the Grammy-nominated band Kneebody, and leading The Music Band, Endsley has been working with some of today’s most exemplary and hippest musicians, including Chris Speed, Charlie Hunter and Ben Allison. With the release of Then The Other, featuring Craig Taborn (piano), Matt Brewer (bass) and Ted Poor (drums), Endsley once again hits the ground running as a bandleader with an album of acoustic quartet music that switch-hits with tunes that are lively and euphonious, to music that posseses a hushed qui vive. Curtis MacDonald -][- COMMUNITY IMMUNITY – [Greenleaf Music, 2011] Music Review

Saxophonist Greg Osby said, “Curtis MacDonald is a saxophonist of note, one who is worthy of great recognition.”

From the meeting, it was obvious within a lingering few notes of “COMMUNITY IMMUNITY” Curtis MacDonald was here to solidify his presence as a composer and saxophonist to immediately challenge virtually any new and seasoned jazz enthusiast who dare travel this path with this intriguing, young and inventive artist from Alberta, Canada.

Currently residing in New York, MacDonald debuts with the innovative yet fundamentally sound “COMMUNITY IMMUNITY” on Greenleaf Music. The album title derives from the idea of belonging to a community of talented musicians, this of course is crucial particularly for aspiring musicians.

While listening to this auspicious array of songs by MacDonald, I noticed the selections composed by him are very short in length. Maybe it’s a standard or unwritten rule for artists in this genre to record songs that are decidedly longer. Nonetheless, MacDonald was obviously moved to do otherwise and focus more on substance whether then appearance which is a quite refreshing approach to recording modern jazz and improvised music that boldly reflects the energy of his creative soul. AARON GOLDBERG & GUILLERMO KELIN - BIENESTAN

“Selfless in all the right ways. Doesn’t set out to demonstrate virtuosity, speed, or heat, though all three are at his disposal. He’s versatile and impressive, and he swings hard.” – The New York Times

“One of the great pleasures of following today’s jazz lies in introducing people to the music of Argentine composer and pianist Guillermo Klein…a new breed of Latin jazz, the seamless mix of folkloric forms and jazz instrumentation and whatever classical
or pop influences come to mind.” – National Public Radio

FROM BIENESTAN: “BURRITO” & “ANITA”

Two creative forces and fellow Sunnyside recording artists – gifted pianist Aaron Goldberg and the brilliant and enigmatic composer-arranger Guillermo Klein – join together for a collection of potent originals and provocative interpretations of jazz standards on Bienestan. A collaboration in the truest sense, this followup to Goldberg’s acclaimed 2010 trio outing, Home, and Klein’s stunning 2010 recording, Domador de Huellas: Music of “Cuchi” Leguizamon, has Goldberg and Klein paired on acoustic piano and Fender Rhodes electric piano, respectively, accompanied by the stellar rhythm tandem of bassist Matt Penman and Goldberg’s longtime drummer Eric Harland. Special guests Miguel Zenón on alto sax and Chris Cheek on tenor and soprano saxes augment the proceedings on five tracks. Continue reading →

Katharina Maschmeyer Quartet feat. Frederik Köster - CIRCLE OF ELEMENTS

Katharina Maschmeyer Quartet feat. Frederik Köster -][- CIRCLE OF ELEMENTS -(MP3)- [Mons Records, 2011]

“Circle of Elements“ – a really philosophical seeming title for the second album of the “Katharina Maschmeyer Quartet“ – which fulfills the musical and compositional variety. Every song of the composers Katharina Maschmeyer and Nils Pollheide is underlined by a
very own compositional story. Stories fed by self experienced moments, experienced situations of real life – the „Circle of Elements“. This leads to the colorfulness, the style of their musical work, on the one hand the thrilling grooves and on the other hand inspired,
lyrical moments.

Brilliant part on “Circle of Elements“ has invited Guestsoloist Frederik Köster. His virtuous trumpet interweaves the sound of the band, gives inspiring impulses, thinks in a compositional way, creates colorful arcs on energetic grooves – here real interaction happens
between artists with mutual deep musical insight, way beyond the guest role…

Modern Jazz of the Katharina Maschmeyer Quartet – with “Circle of Elements“ we have good reason to expect much from the quartet!
