Dave Juarez -][- ROUND RED LIGHT -(MP3)- [Post-Tone Records, 2011] –Album Review –

Dave Juarez - ROUND RED LIGHT

With his debut recording composer/guitarist Dave Juarez turned left from center to record “ROUND RED LIGHT” and join the promising and compelling new voice in jazz Post-Tone Records. The LA based label has caught the eyes, ears and attention of young, creative and innovative musicians globally by the dozens and Dave Juarez is positively one artist I’m sure jazz enthusiast on the modern jazz tip will absolutely love!

“MONTPELLIER VIEW” opens this exciting yet playfully invigorating romp of this nine song collective features Seamus Blake – tenor sax, John Escreet – piano, Lauren Falls – bass and Bastian Weinhold on drums breathe life into this mesmerizing journey.

The title “ROUND RED LIGHT” is a ballad showcases the Barcelona native’s sensitive, tonality and ability to chronicle the attributes of players like Benson or Montgomery with grace and symmetry.

At the third position, there’s “LONELY BROOKLYN.” It burns with rapid speed and dexterity, the infallible interplay by the ensemble employs Juarez’s poetic, generous and unsurpassed chops effortlessly. Continue reading →

Rudresh Mahanthappa - CODEBOOK

Rudresh Mahanthappa -][- CODEBOOK -(MP3)- [Pi Recordings, 2006]

I will give my Cambridge neighbor below the benefit of the doubt that what he is saying is that he prefers the sounds of Stan Getz and Ben Webster (not Kenny G!) over that of Rudresh Mahanthappa. I love the sound of a lush, lyrical ballad but jazz doesn’t need another Stan Getz or Ben Webster. Rudresh and his current piano partner Vijay Iyer are creating and playing some real fresh music. They recently played at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. Unfortunately for me it was sold out. Funny I would think that the new Contemporary Institure of Art would be a more appropriate setting than the drapery lined walls of the ISG Museum but it’s great that they are bringing cutting edge music to this jazz starved town.

Check out the track samples here on this CD as well as Mother Tongue, Blackwater and anything by Vijay Iyer (check out Vijay’s collaborations with Mike Ladd if your really open minded and like a challenge). This is not cacophonously challenging in the avant-garde sense such as Evan Parker (awesome as well!). This is powerful, driven, edgy stuff (Pardon the lame cliches but I am obviously not a musician, critic or a student of music). His tone really appeals to me as do his compositions. All I can say is more please! –Rooster | Amazon.com/Reviewer

Jessica Lee - PERSISTENCE

Jessica Lee -][- PERSISTENCE -(MP3)- [Jessica Lee, 2011]

Persistence—the ability to move forward through difficult times with patience and virtue.

This album is a product of a lot of soul searching. In February of 2009, my only sister suffered a traumatic brain injury that caused her to lose cognition and mobility. My parents decided to care for her full time, forgoing their own lives.

Although being full time in school, living between Boston and Chicago, my parents and I felt strongly that, despite the hardship, I should pursue my dream of being a musician. While composing and choosing the music for this album, I could only be reminded of their story.

Their determination to always provide the best care, even with a severe lack of sleep and constant stress, has changed the way I view my parents: they are unsung heroes. This album is a tribute to them and to my sister, who battles everyday with her suffering.

After nearly a year of hard work, Persistence is finally complete. The album, in itself, was a journey, testing my own persistence. But in the end, I hope that I have delivered a compilation that is uplifting to you, especially when times are tough and it seems impossible to move forward. Please always move forward. —Jessica Lee
