This year’s Soulive Spring Tour culminates with a very special Royal Family showcase for select cities out west. The Royal Family Ball featuring Soulive, Lettuce and Break Science takes over LA, SF, Arcata, Portland, Crystal Bay, Salt Lake City & Denver mid-to-late May. These shows are not to be missed. Chali 2NA joins Break Science for the ball in Los Angeles.

Two artist-run jazz organizations based in Brooklyn, the Brooklyn Jazz Underground and Connection Works, co-produce a weekly jazz series called UNDERGROUND WORKS. Performances take place every Sunday evening at Sycamore in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn. The series is generally curated by a different individual member each month, however, in celebration of the BJU’s 5th Anniversary, May will be curated by and feature all of the members of the Brooklyn Jazz Underground. Two of the Sundays will premiere new music written for a commissioning grant they received from the Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by the Brooklyn Arts Council. The commissioning project is called, “A Portrait Of Brooklyn” which will consist of Brooklyn inspired music by each BJU member performed by the Brooklyn Jazz Underground Ensemble.

Considered one of the finest and most individualistic alto saxophonists and composers on the jazz scene, David Binney continues his ascending artistic evolution with Barefooted Town.

Joined by rising trumpet star Ambrose Akinmusire and longtime collaborator, tenorist Mark Turner on the front line, Binney turns in another fine example of his skills as a distinctive player, composer of music both intellectual and emotional powerful, and seeker of a new jazz expression.

On piano the young Cuban, David Virtelles, Eivind Opsvik on bass and the great Dan Weiss on drums.
