Legendary tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins will pay a visit Copenhagen Jazz Festival, July 3rd, 2011. The 80-year-old Saxophone Colussus returns to Copenhagen for the first time since the mid 90’s, however to judge from recent reviews, Rollins is still playing with unbelievable stamina and vitality.

The concert takes place the first weekend of the festival, July 3rd, in the unique surroundings of The Royal Danish Theater, Old Stage. Performing with Sonny Rollins is his new quintet with Peter Bernstein (guitar), Sammy Figueroa (percussion), Bob Cranshaw (bass) and Kobie Watkins (drums).

The five-time Grammy nominee, guitarist Mike Stern’s music has always come from a colorful and diverse approach – a place where many different artistic styles come together to create a new sound that has roots in jazz, but refuses to comply with any boundaries. In a career that spans three decades and a discography that includes more than a dozen eclectic and innovative recordings, Stern has established himself as one of the leading jazz and jazz-fusion guitarists and composers of his generation. At the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal in June 2007, Stern was presented with the Miles Davis Award, created to honor internationally recognized jazz artists whose work has contributed substantially to the renewal of the genre. Former recipients include Keith Jarrett, Michael Brecker and Charlie Haden. At the 2011 Copenhagen Jazz Festival Stern features some of the finest jazz musicians in the world, special guest Didier Lockwood on violin, Tom Kennedy on bass, and Dave Weckl on drums.

GIANT JAZZ – Keith Jarrett Trio Featuring Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock & Jack DeJohnette (SOLD OUT!)
Pianist and improviser Keith Jarrett, the first artist confirmed for this summer’s Copenhagen Jazz Festival, is playing with his world class trio, featuring Gary Peacock on bass and Jack DeJohnette on drums, in The Royal Danish Opera on July 9th. Keith Jarrett is one of the most innovative improvisers and has enjoyed a career that spans four decades in the worlds of jazz, classical music and pop. Jarrett started his career as a sideman with Art Blakey, Charles Lloyd and later joined Miles Davis in 1969. In the nineteen seventies he won great acclaim for his improvised solo record, “Facing You”, and a number of solo concerts, of which “The Köln Concert” (released 1975) is best known. His first trio featured Charlie Haden and Paul Motian, and he started both his American and European quartets, until he formed Keith Jarrett Trio in 1983 with Peacock and DeJohnette. The Keith Jarrett Trio concert is part of the headlining series, “Giant Jazz”.
