Mack Avenue Records recording artist Kenny Garrett will be presented with an Honorary Doctorate of Music degree from Berklee College of Music. The presentation will be made at the college’s commencement ceremony, Saturday, May 7, at the 7,000-seat Agganis Arena at Boston University. Additionally, Garrett will serve as the commencement speaker, addressing more than 900 Berklee graduates, their parents, and invited guests. Other musicians to receive an honorary degree with Garrett include: Chucho Valdés, Bebo Valdés, Mavis Staples, and Michael McDonald. “I was totally elated when I was advised that I’d be receiving an Honorary Doctorate from the world’s largest college of contemporary music!” reflects Garrett. “This is a dream come true and I’m deeply appreciative and honored to be a member of this illustrious group of recipients.”

This year’s PDX Jazz @ Tony Starlight’s Spring concert series continues this Saturday, April 30 at 8pm, with pianist Tom Grant and vocalist Shelly Rudolph, whowill continue to delight audiences in their native Pacific Northwest. Jazz fans can also hear Tom Grant on KMHD this Friday between 1-4PM as part of the ongoing, “Grand Piano Series” hosted by Lynn Darroch.

With an infectious mix of jazz, soul and pop Tom Grant and Shelly Rudolph share an inescapable chemistry and charm that are obvious from the very first note. As a jazz pianist, Tom Grant has toured the world with giants such as Tony Williams, Joe Henderson and Charles Lloyd. While earning kudos as an in-demand sideman, it was Tom’s own chart topping albums of the 1980s and 90s that gave momentum to the movement later dubbed as smooth jazz. Following his 2009 release, Life is Good, Tom was heralded to be at “the top of his game” by Jazz Times magazine.

Shelly Rudolph’s singing voice has a honeyed richness that she uses with incredible power and musical depth. The Oregonian has described her as the “little singer with the big voice” and she is often likened to singers from Bonnie Raitt to Norah Jones. Shelly has performed and recorded with a wide range of successful talents such as Ken Stange (of Joe Cocker), Dave Matthews (of Etta James, Santana) and 2010 Grammy Award winner David Darling.

Next week at The Cornelia Street Cafe don’t miss trumpeter Shane Endsley as he celebrates the release of his new CD Then The Other on May 4. Another world-class trumpeter plays The Cafe this week, Mr. Tim Hagans, as a guest of saxophonist Adam Kolker, performing music from Kolker’s new recording Reflections, on May 6. On Saturday, May 7, drummer/composer Rob Garcia takes the stage with a legend of jazz, saxophonist Dave Liebman – not to be missed. Closing out the weekend on Sunday, May 8, is the duo performance of pianist Jesse Stacken and cornetist Kirk Knuffke, celebrating the release of the fantastic recording, Orange Was The Color.

The 23-year-old Yamaha Young Performing Artist winner and National Flute Association Jazz Master Class winner Enrique Kalani Trinidad, has captivated jazz followers with his remarkable flute performance, Kalani a flutist composer, has shared his talent with well known Jazz musicians like Mario Rivera, Justo Almario, John Benitez, Nestor Torres, Dave Valentin, Humberto Ramirez, Cachao, Paquito D Rivera, Alex Acuna, Eddie Palmierie and Rosa Pasos just to name a few. With a warm smile and low voice, recipient of a Presidential scholarship to attend Berklee School of Music in Boston, has a lot to offer, Travel the whole world and share my talent with great jazz players is my dream, the young flutest was born in Dallas Texas in November 27,1987 and moved to Puerto Rico when he was only 4-years-old, by listening to his father pianist Richard Trinidad and the music of Chick Corea and compositions of Brazilian singer composer Carlos Jobin, Kalani was interested in learning music starting flute lessons, soon his talent was discover. Kalani is getting ready to start recording his first album this summer, Music is like painting, pick the right colors and with a nice combination you end up with a good portrait.
