Colin Vallon Trio
This year’s PDX Jazz @ Tony Starlight’s Spring concert series will continue on Saturday, May 21 at 8PM with the Switzerland-based Colin Vallon Trio (pianist Colin Vallon, bassist Patrice Moret, and drummer Samuel Rohrer), who will make their US premiere in support of their new ECM album, Rruga.
Pianist Colin Vallon has led his own trio since 1999 and has been playing with his current lineup since 2004. In addition to Portland, the trio will perform in Baltimore (May 19, An die Musik Live!), New York (May 20, Rubin Museum), Los Angeles (May 22, Keyboard Concepts) and Oakland (May 24, Yoshi’s).
Rruga, meaning “path,” “road” or “journey” in Albanian, is the evocative title of the ECM debut by the trio. The group’s new album proposes robust yet uncommonly sensitive music played by a young and well-traveled working band, with years of accumulated experience. This is a piano trio whose gifted leader is influenced, he says, more by singers than pianists, and the group ‘sings’ in its own unique way– with an emphasis on melody, texture, shading and dynamics.
