Colin Vallon Trio

This year’s PDX Jazz @ Tony Starlight’s Spring concert series will continue on Saturday, May 21 at 8PM with the Switzerland-based Colin Vallon Trio (pianist Colin Vallon, bassist Patrice Moret, and drummer Samuel Rohrer), who will make their US premiere in support of their new ECM album, Rruga.

Pianist Colin Vallon has led his own trio since 1999 and has been playing with his current lineup since 2004. In addition to Portland, the trio will perform in Baltimore (May 19, An die Musik Live!), New York (May 20, Rubin Museum), Los Angeles (May 22, Keyboard Concepts) and Oakland (May 24, Yoshi’s).

Rruga, meaning “path,” “road” or “journey” in Albanian, is the evocative title of the ECM debut by the trio. The group’s new album proposes robust yet uncommonly sensitive music played by a young and well-traveled working band, with years of accumulated experience. This is a piano trio whose gifted leader is influenced, he says, more by singers than pianists, and the group ‘sings’ in its own unique way– with an emphasis on melody, texture, shading and dynamics. The exceptional group brings fresh energy and new ideas to the piano trio tradition.

After shared musical experiences on the Swiss jazz scene, the Colin Vallon Trio began their journey five years ago, and have grown into one of Europe’s most promising bands, shaping a rugged and individual sound, inspired by songs and singers, and by the music of the Caucasus region as well as by the jazz tradition. Challenging conventions of the modern jazz piano trio, the instrumentalists meet on equal terms as the music is created, arranged and developed collectively.

In addition to Colin Vallon, New York based vocalist, Sachal Vasandani, will appear for the final PDX Jazz @ Tony Starlight’s performance of the season on Saturday, June 18 at 8PM. With his breakthrough 2007 debut, Eyes Wide Open, Vasandani established himself as one of the most promising voices in modern jazz. A 2010 Downbeat “Rising Star” poll winner, the engaging singer presented his distinctive blend of jazz and pop with the critically acclaimed release, We Move (2009). The forthcoming Hi-Fly album features Jon Hendricks, John Ellis and Ambrose Akinmusire and confirms the high praise showered on its two predecessors underscoring the fact that Sachal is one of the freshest, most versatile male vocalists to emerge onto the scene since Kurt Elling. States New York Times critics Nate Chinen, “What makes a jazz singer has more to do with a set of tools and instincts, and by that measure Sachal qualifies as one of the stronger new arrivals in the field.”
