Magos Herrera - MEXICO AZUL

There certainly is pride for the cultural contribution Mexico has bestowed on the world, especially those of the country’s Golden Age of cinema and television. The rich film music of that elegant era from the thirties and forties easily matches and in many cases surpasses the well-known standards from that country’s northern neighbor.

The exquisitely enticing internationally renowned singer Magos Herrera is a brilliant exponent of her country’s magnificent musical heritage, as evidenced by her sumptuous sophomore Sunnyside release, Mexico Azul; a twenty first century treatment of several Mexican film standards, brilliantly rendered by an all-star New York City-based cadre of jazz giants, including trumpeter Tim Hagans, guitarist Adam Rogers, pianist Luis Perdomo, bassist John Patitucci, drummer Alex Kautz, percussionist Rogerio Bocatto and producer (and Sunnyside labelmate) Tim Ries, who first featured Herrera on his Stones World CD on the same label. Never Before Released 1970s Blaxploitation Soundtrack The Big One by Crushed Velvet & The Velveteers Available May 24 on Limited Edition Vinyl and Free MP3 download from Royal Family Records.

Crushed Velvet -The Big One

Brooklyn, NY — Royal Family Records has announced the May 24 release of the long lost 1970s’ motion picture soundtrack The Big One by Crushed Velvet & The Velveteers. This never-before-issued soul music gem was recently unearthed by Soulive drummer Alan Evans when a family friend in Buffalo, NY put him in touch with the movie’s director Cleo McBride. A 1974 Shaft-meets-007 Blaxploitation production, The Big One never made it to the big screen as the film was reported to have been destroyed in a fire soon after completion. The soundtrack recordings remained dormant until Evans was recruited to mix the original sessions and release it through Soulive’s record company Royal Family Records. The Brooklyn-based label will release the soundtrack as both a free mp3 album download and on limited edition vinyl.

Jon Irabagon

Saxophonist Jon Irabagon, winner of the 2008 Thelonious Monk Competition, has been nominated by the Jazz Journalists Association (JJA) in both the “Up and Coming Artist” and “Tenor Saxophonist of the Year” categories for its prestigious 2011 Jazz Awards.

In the “Up and Coming Artist” category, Irabagon joins such talented musicians as Ambrose Akinmusire, Darius Jones and Gerald Clayton in being recognized as those to watch in coming years. Other nominees in the “Tenor Saxophonist of the Year” category include such legends as Chris Potter, Joe Lovano, Sonny Rollins, Tony Malaby and Wayne Shorter. Award winners are selected by JJA members who have until May 11th to vote.

“In looking at who has been nominated in both of these categories and the incredible body of work these artists have put out, the cliché that it’s an honor just to have been nominated is true,” said Irabagon. “It’s absolutely amazing to have my name on the same list as those who I see as the best and most thought-provoking musicians in jazz today.” Continue reading →
