Being that it’s Mother’s Day Weekend, I couldn’t resist taking time to talk about this extremely talented vocalist named Jessie Marquez. Wow, what a joy to listen too her latest album “ALL I SEE IS SKY.” This recording captures the warmth, beauty and the overall sensibilities of who she is as an artist from the opening melodies of the enchanting “Dime, Amor (Tell Me, Love).” Her lyricism and impeccable style is absolutely intoxicating. Jessie’s encompassing Cuban heritage is delightful, sexy, cool and inviting. Jessie Marquez -[|]- ALL I SEE IS SKY -(MP3)- [Carena Records, 2011]

While a trip to La Habana might be out of range for most Northwest music lovers, singer Jessie Marquez can get you there fast and without the red tape.

Marquez has sung in clubs, cabarets, theaters, street parties, and on television and radio throughout Cuba. Her soothing vocals are a mix of North American harmony and Latin emotion that embody the Cuban genre called filin (a play on the word “feeling”).

An offshoot of the romantic bolero, filin draws from North American jazz, Brazilian bossa nova, and the Cuban familiarity with the many shades of love and longing.

Marquez, whose father was raised in Havana, grew up eating her grandmother’s Cuban cooking and hearing stories about the family’s days on the island. She first visited her father’s childhood home in 1996. Right away, she says, “there was something very familiar about it –the way people spoke, their gestures, their attitudes. I felt at home.” –Jessie Marquez | BIOGRAPHY

Chris Lightcap's Bigmouth - DELUXE

Chris Lightcap’s Bigmouth -[]- DELUXE -(MP3)- [Clean Feed Records, 2010]

Bassist and composer Chris Lightcap has collaborated with Marc Ribot, Regina Carter, Craig Taborn, Mark Turner, John Scofield, Dave Liebman, Paquito D’Rivera, Joe Morris, Sheila Jordan, James Carter, Butch Morris, Ben Monder and Tom Harrell. Since 1998 he has also led his own groups and produced three critically acclaimed albums of original music.

Born and raised in the great beer and steel town of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Chris Lightcap started out on the piano at age eight, switched to violin at nine and began to teach himself the electric bass at fourteen. He simultaneously played violin in a local youth symphony and took gigs on bass guitar with local rock bands as well as his school’s jazz and concert bands. As a senior in high school he started to study the upright bass and the following year he enrolled at Williams College. During this period he studied with jazz bassist Cameron Brown, composers Robert Suderburg, David Kechley and Alvin Lucier, trumpeter Bill Dixon, and the late master bassist Milt Hinton. While attending Wesleyan University for a semester he also had the privilege of studying and performing with master drummer Edward Blackwell shortly before his death in 1992. Upon graduating from Williams with the school’s Hutchinson arts grant he moved to his current home, New York City.
