Bryan Carter has already begun an incredible career with regular performances at jazz venues in New York and in his native cities of Chicago and St. Louis.

Beginning drums at the age of three, Carter quickly developed a strong passion for music, especially jazz, and by the age of eleven had already studied with jazz masters Louie Bellson, Harold Jones, and Ed Thigpen. Carter’s early performances with Chicago’s South Shore Jazz Ensemble directed by his father, famed educator, Ronald Carter and other conglomerate jazz ensembles served as a catalyst to his developing career. During high school Carter was accepted to the prestigious Brubeck Summer Jazz Colony, the Vail Jazz Workshop, and the Grammy Jazz Ensemble. – BIO

Mark Rapp has played sold out shows at the Blue Note (NY), Joe’s Pub, Yoshi’s (San Fran) and such venues as Blues Alley (D.C.), the JVC Newport Jazz Festival, Dizzy’s at Jazz Lincoln Center, JazzTime Festival (Croatia), Jazzland (Vienna), Jazz Standard (New York) and more. Mark was named a “top emerging trumpeter” by Downbeat Magazine, featured on a Travel Channel documentary and has played with such diverse artists as Branford Marsalis to Hootie and the Blowfish.

Mark has 4 records as a leader including his critically-loved debut Token Tales (2009), Braden-Rapp: The Strayhorn Project (2010) with saxophone great Don Braden and GRAMMY-nominated pianist Gerald Clayton (bradenrapp.com The Song Project’s Art of the Song, vol.1 (2010) – including an industry first “Applum” (thesongproject.net) and most recently, Good Eats (2011), an engaging collection of arrangements of Lou Donaldson compositions. Disney’s CD Everybody Wants to be a Cat, which includes Roy Hargrove, Dave Brubeck, Esperanza Spalding, The Bad Plus, Joshua Redman and more, features Mark on its closing track.

Constantly performing in support of his various projects including Good Eats, Token Tales, The Strayhorn Project and The Song Project, Mark resides in Geneva, Switzerland and New York, NY. Mark plays a custom Monette Prana LTJ with a Monette B3 mouthpiece, a custom Monette Ajna I Prana trumpet with a Monette B2GS3 88 mouthpiece and a Kanstul flugelhorn with a Monette B2 mouthpiece. -BIO

Songs of Mirth and Melancholy

Few contemporary pairings of saxophonist and pianist have been as inspired and productive as that of Branford Marsalis and Joey Calderazzo. Since replacing the late Kenny Kirkland in Marsalis’ quartet in 1998, Calderazzo has blended seamlessly into the uncompromising creative atmosphere of the ensemble and revealed new facets of his own conception, while Marsalis in turn has been inspired by the pianist’s challenging instrumental support and growing strength as a composer. The relationship grows ever deeper, as documented on the new Marsalis Music CD Songs of Mirth and Melancholy.

Adding duo performances to their quartet collaboration is an idea launched on the golf course – or, more precisely, the 19th hole. As Calderazzo explains it, “The duo originated when Branford and I would play a couple of numbers at celebrity golf tournaments. But we really took it to another level at the 2009 Newport Jazz Festival, where we played four tunes in a short set and the interaction was really happening. That’s when we decided to record.” The session was a logical step for Marsalis, who has previously displayed his duo prowess in albums with his father Ellis (Loved Ones, Columbia, 1995) and Harry Connick, Jr. (Occasion, Volume 2 of Marsalis Music’s “Connick on Piano” series, 2005, and the complementary Marsalis Music DVD A Duo Occasion, filmed at the 2005 Ottawa Jazz Festival). —Torontojazz.com

On The Time of the Sun, Tom and his quintet confirm their place at the top of the post-bop mainstream. Of course, Harrell’s often beautiful, always rigorous solos are to the fore but he allows each member of his band to shine and nobody is relegated to second fiddle.

Whether it be on ballads or driving pieces, the group’s expositions, interactions and song development is exuberant and extensive, devoid of gimmicks and are delivered in an energetic, yet disciplined and sophisticated manner.
