Showcase Marks Launch of IN ONE WIND’s
June East Coast/Midwest Tour
Playing Music From Their Debut,
How Bright A Shadow! Out August 16
The Brooklyn, NY-based indie folk outfit In One Wind are set to release their first full-length album, How Bright a Shadow! on the Primary Records label (the album is also Primary’s first release). The label will hold a showcase for all of its affiliated artists June 9th at the Gowanus/Park Slope performance space, Littlefield.
In One Wind is comprised of vocalist, guitarist and primary songwriter Angelo Spagnolo, vocalists Mallory Glaser and Samantha Rise, bassist Robert Lundberg, multi-reedist Steven Lugerner, and drummer Max Jaffe. How Bright a Shadow! draws on folk, indie rock, avant-garde, and pop influences. The band formed in February 2009, with Lugerner and Jaffe joining in the summer of that year. Anthony LaMarca (drummer for St. Vincent, Galaxie 500, Dean and Britta) produced the album and is part owner of Primary Records along with childhood friend Oren Kessler. LaMarca’s frequent employer, Annie Clark of St. Vincent will DJ the night.
“I have known and admired everyone in In One Wind well before recording with them,” says LaMarca. “My role as producer was a pretty easy one as the band already had incredible songs and arrangements. My main job was to be an external set of ears; I applaud the band for being comfortable with having someone not in the band help make some changes. This freedom allowed us to experiment with layering voices and woodwinds and adding some collage elements without holding the previous versions of the songs as precious.”
Though steeped in the tradition of folk music, In One Wind incorporates a wide range of influences from jazz to country, even stretching effortlessly into the world of improvised music and the avant-garde. The ability to start a show with soft guitar strums and whispered vocals and seamlessly break off into odd-metered grooves and angular three part harmonies sets In One Wind apart.
LaMarca’s own band, The Building, co-led with his brother Angelo, will also play the showcase at Littlefield along with all the labels associated acts, many of whom play in either In One Wind or The Building.
