Christian Pabst TRIO, DAYS OF INFINITY

Christian Pabst TRIO -]|[- DAYS OF INFINITY -(MP3)- [Challenge Records Int., 2011] – Album Reviewed –

Just days ago I received this new recording titled “Days of Infinity” by a young composer /pianist from Germany named Christian Pabst. Sometimes we can neglect listening to new artists, but doing so isn’t exactly at the top of my list. In fact, for those of you who frequent this spot know I love listening to, publishing and reviewing music by them. In this case, I’m thankful for Father of time allowed me the opportunity to listen to extraordinary pianist named Christian Pabst.

“Days of Infinity” was recorded and is available on Challenge Records Int features a gifted cast of International musicians which includes Gerard Presencer (Trumpet & Flugelhorn) – David Andres (Bass) – Andreas Klein (drums) and Christian Pabst (Piano & Rhodes).

“Fly and Unfold” the lead piece of ten selections opens this charismatic, flexible and substantive palette of compelling songs found exclusively on and throughout “Days of Infinity.” Although short in time, this jewel is armed with significant details as it dances inexplicably with intensity and creative spirit I’ve come to expect from this music called jazz. The Impossible Gentlemen

The Impossible Gentlemen -]|[- THE IMPOSSIBLE GENTLEMEN -(MP3)- [Basho Records, 2011] – Album Review –

Last year I was introduced to and blown away by the music of British composer/pianist Gwilym Simcock’s “Blues Vignette.” On this occasion, I’m thrilled to present you to another splendid project by this truly amazing composer titled “The Impossible Gentlemen” just recently release on Basho Records.

“The Impossible Gentlemen” is comprised of eight lyrically explosive gems which vary in depth, style and texture. Of course, this is why I adore composer Gwilym Simcock’s music. This album features four wonderful players from two generations Simcock (30) on piano, along with guitarist Mike Walker from Manchester (Born in 1962), veteran bassist Steve Swallow (70) and drummer Adam Nussbaum (55) rounds out this cast of intriguing players.

“Laugh Lines” the first of four compositions pen by guitarist Mike Walker opens the session. This jewel appropriately sets the pace with tenacious interplay that is possibly a pathway for the ensemble to begin with what I describe as simply intoxicating dexterity displayed by these seasoned players. Matteo Sabattini - DAWNING

Matteo Sabattini -][- DAWNING -(MP3)- [Fresh Sound Records, 2011]

“New York altoist and composer Matteo Sabattini’s leader debut is a beautifully crafted album, with Mike Moreno (guitar), Kristjan Randalu (piano), Matt Clohesy (bass) and an electrifying Obed Calvaire (drums). Sabattini combines warmth with a serene sense of studied engagement, and that duality shapes each performance. The interplay is markedly contrapuntal in character and there’s a concern with balance and textural contrast as well as high energy. It’s there in the radical overhaul of Estaté and a blues, Distensions, in the measured development of Prism, the drama of My Journey and a lovely The Quiet Before Sunrise, where the group is joined by guitarist Lage Lund. This last track, incidentally, is transposed on the CD with a revamped The Nearness of You. This is a savoury encounter between European sensibility and New York edge.” — Ray Comiskey -The Irish Times

Kit Downes Trio - QUIET TIGER

Kit Downes Trio -][- QUIET TIGER -(MP3)- [Basho Records, 2011]

Pianist/composer Kit Downes exploded onto the British Jazz Scene playing with the band Empirical, taking him through Europe and America, and then with Troyka, Stan Sulzmann, Fraud and Acoustic Ladyland. He then went on to win the BBC Jazz Award for Rising Star in 2008, a Yamaha Scholorship in 2009 and a British Jazz Award in 2010. After Empirical, Kit moved on to his own trio project and his debut album saw him develop into a strong voice both as a performer and composer. Joined by his two Royal Academy colleagues award winning bassist Calum Gourlay and rising drum star James Maddren this music displayed a level of understanding and intelligence between players that could have only come from working closely together for a number of years. Their debut record ‘Golden’ was subsequently nominated for the 2010 Mercury Music Prize. Having just recorded their second album for Basho, the trio have invited guests James Allsopp (bass clarinet), Josh Arceleo (tenor saxophone) and Adrien Dennefeld (cello) to join them on the album and on their gigs for the release.

The band has spent these years developing their own personal sound. It uses melody, inspired from a range of sources ranging from Bela Bartok to Bill Frisell to Skip James, and endeavors to create a sound that is engaging, but without sacrificing it’s integrity. They have recorded live sessions for BBC Jazz on 3, BBC 6 Music and Jamie Cullum on BBC 2 as well as playing at the NattJazz Festival in Norway, Tel Aviv Jazz Festival, London Jazz Festival, Cheltenham Jazz Festival, Brecon Jazz Festival and Glasgow Jazz Festival and have toured throughout Germany and Austria. —BIO (Kit Downes)
