Headhunters - PLATINUM

Headhunters -[|]- PLATINUM -(MP3)- [1-2-3-4 GO, 2011]
Platinum brings the Headhunters the first jazz/fusion group to go platinum in the 70s together with rap and funk legends Snoop Dogg, Killah Priest, and George Clinton. From the instant funk classic Chameleon to the rare groove sound of God Make Me Funky, the Headhunters have redefined modern funk, jazz, and world music as one of the most innovative groups in history.

Founded in 1973, the Headhunters recorded their eponymous debut with Herbie Hancock, heralded as the first platinum jazz/fusion project in history. The band went on to produce more seminal records, including Survival of the Fittest, which featured the funk anthem God Make Me Funky, one of the most sampled jazz/fusion songs in modern music history. The group is acclaimed for its musical pioneering and innovative concepts.

HAROLD LÓPEZ NUSSA TRIO

For decades, the United States and Cuba have shared a complex relationship. While there have been many business, travel and diplomatic restrictions between the two countries, U.S. citizens have gravitated to Cuba’s tropical culture – taking in the country’s sights, sounds and cuisines.

From a musical standpoint, in addition to the Buena Vista Social Club phenomenon and the enduring legacy of Los Van Van, there is a strong relationship between Afro-Cuban music and American jazz. Over the years, many of the world’s finest jazz artists have hailed from Cuba – virtuosos such as Bebo & Chucho Valdés, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Paquito D’Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Israel López and Machito as well as younger, rising stars such as Roberto Fonseca, Alfredo Rodriguez, Yosvany Terry and Dafnis Prieto.

Fast forward to 2010-2011: the relationship between these two countries and two forms of music continues. Last October, Wynton Marsalis & Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra conducted a five-day residency in Havana, working and performing with students, in collaboration with the Valdés family. This June, Concord Picante releases Ninety Miles, a collaboration featuring Stefon Harris, David Sánchez and Christian Scott (recorded in Havana over the span of a week). Continue reading →

Craig Taborn - AVENGING ANGEL

Craig Taborn [|] AVENGING ANGEL – [ECM, 2011]

Avenging Angel, a powerful, creative and rigorously uncompromising album, is the first unaccompanied solo disc in Craig Taborn’s discography as well as the first ECM recording issued under his name. The album was recorded in the exceptional acoustic of the recital room at Lugano’s Studio RSI, with Manfred Eicher producing.

The disc follows several distinguished `sideman’ appearances for ECM, including three Roscoe Mitchell albums – Nine To Get Ready, Composition / Improvisation Nos. 1, 2 & 3 and the recent Far Side – as well as Michael Formanek’s The Rub and Spare Change, Evan Parker’s Boustrophedon and David Torn’s Prezens. Taborn (born 1970) has been widely-valued for his resourcefulness as an improviser, in and out of the jazz tradition, since the early 1990s, when his work with saxophonist James Carter’s groups drew the attention of musicians, press and listeners alike. His own groups have since explored a range of options, and he’s also been at the forefront of experiments cross referencing jazz and electronics. In this regard his 2004 album Junk Magic (on the Thirsty Ear label), has been cited as a pioneering work, and Craig has repeatedly been voted #1 Rising Star Keyboardist in the DownBeat Critics Poll.
