BBB – is the debut album of Colombian composer and pianist Juan Andrés Ospina. Through the use of skilled craftsmanship, Ospina translates his rich imagination into beautiful compositions and arrangements written for a sextet of fine young emerging multi-national artists.

In BBB, Ospina crafts elements of his native Colombian music into a fresh, new sound by artfully blending them with traditional jazz elements. His compositions make use of creatively orchestrated melodies and exploratory improvisations to tastefully alternate between beautiful sections of tranquility to more brooding and darker episodes. All of these elements combine to show that BBB is a creative and unique albim that marks the beginning of what promises will be a long and exciting career of this talented musician.

JULIAN SIEGEL is an in-demand saxophonist on the European Jazz scene who has worked with many of the top figures in the music. He has just been awarded the BBC Jazz Award 2007 for Best Instrumentalist. His current bands are the Julian Siegel Trio with US Improvising stars Drummer Joey Baron and Bassist Greg Cohen, Partisans, co-led for the last 10 years with guitarist Phil Robson, and the Julian Siegel Quartet featuring pianist Liam Noble. He played with the Anglo-American Big Band of the legendary US pianist and composer Andrew Hill. In October 2007 he toured with the Mike Gibbs 70th Birthday Big Band alongside Bill Frisell, Steve Swallow and Adam Nussbaum. In 2004 he toured the UK with Brazilian legend Hermeto Pascoal UK Big Band. He has performed with Django Bates Delightful Precipice and Human Chain with The Smith Quartet, Dexter Gordon’s long time pianist Kirk Lightsey, John Taylor, Jazz Jamaica Big Band, Kenny Wheeler, Norma Winstone and Robert Mitchell, Julian Arguelles Octet, Gwilym Simcock, Byron Wallen’s Octet featuring Tony Kofi, Ingrid Laubrock Band, Dave Green Trio, Jason Yarde’s ‘Acoutastic Bombastic’, Mark Lockheart’s ‘Big Idea’, Colin Towns, the NDR Big Band, Stan Sulzmann’s Big Band and Hans Koller New Memories Band, which recorded in December 2003 with soprano saxophone legend Steve Lacy.

At the Ruhr Trenniale festival 2006 he worked with NYC performance artist/violinist Laurie Anderson and pianist/singer-songwriter Steve Nieve. The band also featured Drummer Kenny Wollesen, cellist Vincent Segal and bassist Greg Cohen.

He is a band member of Gary Husband’s quartet ‘ Drive’ which released the album ‘Hotwired’ on the Abstract Logix label in 2009. The band recorded Julian’s composition ’10/4′ on this record. Drive’s most recent gig was at the 2009 London Jazz festival opposite the Marcus Miller Band at the Barbican Centre.–BIO (Julian Siegel)

30th anniversary of nation’s highest honor in jazz

Washington, DC – The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) today announced the recipients of the 2012 NEA Jazz Masters Award-the nation’s highest honor in jazz. The five recipients will receive a one-time award of $25,000 and be publicly honored at the annual awards ceremony and concert, produced by Jazz at Lincoln Center at its home, Frederick P. Rose Hall in New York City.

With this class, the NEA is celebrating the 30th anniversary of the NEA Jazz Masters Awards, which recognizes outstanding musicians for their lifetime achievements and significant contributions to the development and performance of jazz.
