Aaron Koppel Quartet -][- Multiverse (MP3) [Chicago Sessions, 2012]
[Biography] – Born and raised on the North Side of Chicago, Aaron Koppel started playing guitar at age eleven and has been composing music virtually his entire life. Over the years Koppel has established a name for himself. WGN-TV National Mid-day News quotes him as having a “huge following in the local jazz scene and also garnered national recognition.” Koppel has been nominated for and won several awards including #7 in Neil Tesser’s Top Ten Chicago Jazz Discs of 2009 for Aaron Koppel Quartet’s album, Falling Together Falling Apart. The Aaron Koppel Quartet was nominated for the 2009 Grammy nominating ballot for Best Instrumental Jazz Album and Koppel received an outstanding performance award at The 49th Annual Collegiate Jazz Fest. The AKQ were also nominated for two International jazz awards: Best International Jazz Song and Best International Jazz Group, in the 2007 Toronto Exclusive Magazine Awards. Downbeat Magazine, in a recent article, states, “26-year-old Koppel takes a conventional form (mainstream jazz) and makes something of it, breaking up the material, avoiding the tendency to just write blowing vehicles.”
Aaron Koppel has performed and/or recorded with: Tim Warfield, Matthew Santos, vocalist: Lupe Fiasco, Christopher Lloyd, actor: Taxi, Back to the Future, Vince Welnick, keyboardist/vocalist: Grateful Dead, Frank Catalano Kris Myers, drummer: Umphrey’s McGee, Chris Siebold, Greg Ward, Geof Bradfield, and many others. Aaron has performed as a guitarist for weddings, private parties, art galleries, and for dancebands and showbands on Holland America cruise lines. He is currently working on Aaron Koppel Quartet’s 3rd album, Multiverse, which is being released by the Chicago jazz label Chicago Sessions. Koppel has performed at numerous venues and festivals throughout the Midwest including: The Green Mill, The Jazz Showcase, Andy’s Jazz Club, Martyrs, Hot House, Kinetic Playground, Abbey Pub, Woodstock Jazz Festival, 2nd Annual South side 79th Street Festival, Champaign Downtown Streetfest, and Iowa’s River Roots Festival.
Aaron Koppel has been on the adjunct music faculty at Hinsdale Central High School since 2007. His responsibilities include running sectionals with all three jazz band’s rhythm sections; running concert band sectionals, running percussion ensemble; and private jazz instruction for piano, bass, and guitar. Koppel has been a music educator since 2001. He is a guitar and band instructor at Des Plaines School of Music, Allegro Music Center, and A Sound Education. Koppel has volunteered as a music theory instructor at The Helen C. Peirce School of International Studies as part of a nonprofit program, Music For Kids, geared towards the goal of making music lessons available to underprivileged children. Aaron Koppel received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Jazz Performance in 2007 from Columbia College Chicago. Koppel has studied and attended workshops from legends Bobby Broom, Joe Lovano, Jon Faddis, Pat Martino, and Bootsy Collins.
