Gilad Hekselman -][- Hearts Wide Open (MP3) [Le Chant du Monde, 2011]

[Biography] – Gilad Hekselman, a young Israeli musician living in New York, has become important over the last five years — if not yet to jazz listeners in general, at least to the serious-minded subculture of jazz-guitar students. In that time he’s performed almost constantly with his trio and guest players at the West Village clubs Smalls and Fat Cat, and one can tell: he plays the long sweeps of notes, harmonically mobile and emotionally humid, that have grown like vines in those places. Yosvany Terry Sextet -][- TODAY’S OPINION [Criss Cross, 2012]

Yosvany Terry has helped redefine the Afro-Cuban and contemporary jazz idiom in the New York music scene. Mr. Terry’s new release Today’s Opinion reflects the growth of a young but mature composer in the international music scene. The music of this album reflects Mr. Terry’s deep cultural roots as well as the versatility of his musical styles. An extraordinary cast of musicians performs on this recording: Michael Rodriguez on trumpet, Osmany Paredes on piano, Yunior Terry on bass, Obed Calvaireon drums, Pedro Martinez on percussion and vocal, and Yosvany Terry on saxophones and chekere.

This exceptional, multilayered recording Today’s Opinion manages to be simultaneously accessible and profound; it signals the next phase of Mr. Terry’s distinctive personal vision.

This recording will be available for release February 21, 2012.

Fabian Almazan Trio -][- Personalities (MP3) [Palmetto Records, 2011]

[Biography] – Pianist and composer Fabian Almazan, a native of Cuba now residing in New York City, found his musical roots as a child in his homeland of Havana where he first became involved in the classical piano tradition. When his parents could not afford to pay for private piano lessons, having fled Cuba in political exile to Miami, FL, pianist Conchita Betancourt was gracious enough to impart free lessons for over three years. Thanks to Mrs. Betancourt’s exceeding generosity, Fabian was able to audition for the New World School of the Arts High School in Miami, FL where he studied from 1998 to 2002. Continue reading →

Happy New Year

Greeting’s everyone, being that time isn’t promised I must take a moment to affirm my appreciation for you. Without folks like you there would not be a rational reason to pursue blogging about jazz or anything for that matter. Besides, as I see it, on our journey that we must learn to walk fearlessly, keep the faith and preserver through life with love and compassion for our brothers and sisters notwithstanding their race, religion, creed, education and culture. With that said, and equally as important I sincerely value your time, love, patience, insight, criticism and your passion for jazz regardless of the flavor!

In the meantime, my resolution this New Year regardless of circumstance is to stay in the fight, stay strong, be at peace, and strive to love one another to proactively and positively make a difference in someone’s life. Peace and God bless, may you have a prosperous year ahead.
