Dave Douglas

While 2012 could be the year of the global apocalypse as predicted by the Mayans, trumpeter, composer and label head Dave Douglas and his label Greenleaf Music (GLM) continue to roll full-steam ahead by releasing jazz, post-jazz, and other creative music. The label’s credo is simply about creativity in musical expression. As a result, GLM’s sound is defined by the artists Douglas chooses to sign, allowing them room to define their own world—new sounds that connect, music that has something personal to say that is unique to that individual, as well as having something universal to offer. GLM believes that what interests listeners is not just the recorded product, but the artists themselves. As such we are interested in making available sheet music, artist commentary, discussion and more. Continue reading →

Gregoire Maret -][- Gregoire Maret [Entertainment One, 2012]

Prepare yourself for the most important debut jazz recording since Esperanza Spaulding broke through a few years ago. Gregoire Marét is not only a musicians musician as evidenced by the testimonials above but hes a charismatic virtuoso whose musical concepts are at once highly melodic, soulful, swinging, and elegantly exploratory.

On his debut album, Gregoire proves himself to be a master interpreter of works by Chick Corea, Milton Nascimento, Stevie Wonder, Pat Metheny, and others; and also an impressionistic composer of great panache and sophistication in his own right. The selections are extended, diverse, richly textured and always engaging.

Supported by an impressive cast, including vocalists Cassandra Wilson and Raul Midòn, and bassist Marcus Miller, Gregoire Marét has brought forth that rare creation in todays jazz an album that is simultaneously forward-looking and in the moment. State of the art, 2012.

Kool&Klean -][- Volume III –MP3– [Kvk Music, 2012]

I’m a huge fan of Kool & Klean. I never heard of them until a week ago but now I have all their CD’s. Every one is a prized masterpiece in one way or another.

I feel fortunate to even be listening to them. Like others have said, if you like Paul Hardcastle this is similar and just as enjoyable. For this CD the songs are fresh and new, very relaxing and engaging.

I do have to say though that after listening to all 3 volumes where every one is a hit, the 2nd one seemed to be the most upbeat. So give these a try, you’ll be glad you did! —bond7 | Amazon.com | Customer Review

Will Bernard Trio, Outdoor Living

The life of a touring jazz musician doesn’t involve a lot of what most people would picture as “the great outdoors.” Guitarist Will Bernard’s groove-heavy new organ trio CD Outdoor Living, however, pays tribute to an entirely different kind of landscape. Roads stretching to the horizon viewed from the windows of a van, the cracked pavement of city streets, motel parking lots – this is the scenery that Bernard brings to light on these nine original tunes.
