Pete Zimmer, a gifted and articulate drummer, composer, and educator, moved to Queens, New York in June of 2001 after his completion at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA. Upon his arrival in the Big Apple, Pete Zimmer quickly became recognized for his uncanny swing and propulsive authority; all while maintaining a very high sense of musicality when seated behind the drums. Gunnar Mossblad, CROSSCURRENTS

Gunnar Mossblad -][- CROSSCURRENTS –MP3– [Summit Records, 2012] –

CrossCurrents, is a unique jazz group born of the jazz faculty ensemble at The University of Toledo. Gunnar Mossblad formed the group in the fall of 2002 when he came to UT to be apart of building a comprehensive jazz program with the jazz master Jon Hendricks. Over the next few years, the jazz program flourished and so did the faculty jazz group. In addition to backing up Jon Hendricks on occasion, the faculty group got to know one another musically through a regular gig at Murphy’s Place; a now defunct jazz club in the heart of downtown Toledo. There, the group grew musically, and with the desire to explore original music, a weekly rehearsal schedule was established. In the years following, the group became a close-knit group of like-minded jazz musicians playing all original music, with a unique musical personality. Continue reading →

McCoy Tyner, LAND OF GIANTS

McCoy Tyner -][- LAND OF GIANTS –MP3– [Telarc, 2012] –

There is something about the combination of Bobby Hutchinson’s vibes and McCoy Tyner’s piano that gives this music a sound that is unique in jaz. These two musicians have a way of blending their lines so perfectly that it is as if the music is playing them instead of the other way around. The bass playing of Charnett Moffet is equal to the task of keeping up with these two musical geniuses. The first cut Serro De Mar is stunningly beautiful and the latin tinged Manalyuca is driven by a haunting bassline supplied by Moffet. Continue reading →
