PDX Jazz, the presenting organization of the Portland Jazz Festival in partnership with the Mission Theater, along with The Crystal Hotel and our media sponsor KMHD Radio, announces the New Orleans born saxophonist Devin Phillips with special guest vocalist Richard Arnold as part of the continuing PDX Jazz @ The Mission Theater series on Thursday, July 19 @ 7:30. Phillips will lead a quartet for this special performance composed of pianist Andrew Oliver, bassist Andrew St. James, and drummer Chris Brown in a Coltrane themed program titled, “John Coltrane Remembered – A Night of Ballads and Blues.”

Human Spirit is the title from a previous album by trumpeter/composer Thomas Marriot, along with his cohorts Mark Taylor and Matt Jorgensen serve up an engaging brew of bop-influenced modern jazz also features two guest performers Orrin Evans and Essiet Essiet round out the quintet on their latest “Live at the Earshot Jazz Festival” (Dialogue) was recorded two-night engagement at Tula’s Jazz Club in Seattle, WA is currently available on the creative, innovative and eclectic Origin Records.

The young pianist Ruslan has already traveled the world, playing with some of the biggest names in jazz and pop music. Born in Uman, in what is now Ukraine, Ruslan’s musical heritage comes from a family rich with generations of musicians. He was exposed early in his youth to American Jazz and improvisation, and began to see music as a mission in itself, a source of passion. Ruslan’s family moved to Israel when he was ten, where he continued his music studies.

Yet what the six albums that make up this comprehensive collection prove beyond a shadow of a doubt is that the early to mid 1970s saw some of the most adventurous and satisfying work of Weather Report’s entire lifespan.

Sean Haefeli is a forward-thinking musician, skilled as a pianist, vocalist, lyricist and composer. His music represents a convergence of sensibilities and aesthetics, as jazz, soul, and poetic lyricism intersect, creating a distinctively modern sound.

Throughout his youth, Sean trained as a classical pianist, and later, a vocalist, while primarily listening to hip-hop and r&b. He continued to navigate seemingly disparate worlds, entering Depaul University as an opera major, and graduating with a degree in English literature. He cultivated an appreciation for a diverse range of poets, and regularly appeared on Chicago’s spoken word scene. After graduation, he immersed himself in jazz and improvisation, working in a range of performance mediums and styles, while further widening his listening sphere. -[Excerpt | Biography]-
