Devin Phillips
PDX Jazz, the presenting organization of the Portland Jazz Festival in partnership with the Mission Theater, along with The Crystal Hotel and our media sponsor KMHD Radio, announces the New Orleans born saxophonist Devin Phillips with special guest vocalist Richard Arnold as part of the continuing PDX Jazz @ The Mission Theater series on Thursday, July 19 @ 7:30. Phillips will lead a quartet for this special performance composed of pianist Andrew Oliver, bassist Andrew St. James, and drummer Chris Brown in a Coltrane themed program titled, “John Coltrane Remembered – A Night of Ballads and Blues.”
Last July, Phillips celebrated John Coltrane through instrumental interpretations of classic material including “A Love Supreme” suite which was broadcast on Sirius XM radio Labor Day 2011. For this concert Phillips has chosen the following repertoire: “Lush Life”, “My One and Only Love”, “They Say It’s Wonderful”, and “Autumn Serenade” with Arnold on vocals; as well as “Naima”, “I Want to Talk About You”, “Last Blues”, “Blue Trane”, “John Coltrane Plays the Blues”, “Chasin the Trane”, and “Blues to You” for the instrumental portion.
“Devin has a huge, robust sound, like Sonny Rollins or Dexter Gordon, but what sets him apart is the amazing rhythmic complexity of his playing.” – Ron Steen
