Medeski Martin & Wood -][- FREE MAGIC –Mp3– [Indirecto Records, 2012] –

Medeski Martin & Wood have announced the release of Free Magic due September 25 on the band’s label Indirecto Records. For its latest effort, MMW dip into their archives to present a collection of recordings documenting their first-ever acoustic tour in 2007. The set, stretching out over five expansive tracks, captures the three intrepid improvisers—keyboardist John Medeski, bassist Chris Wood and drummer Billy Martin—exploring the telepathic hookup and deep groove sensibility that has defined MMW since its inception in 1991. The Bad Plus, MADE POSSIBLE

The Bad Plus -][- MADE POSSIBLE – [Entertainment One Music, 2012] –

The Bad Plus has spent more than a decade redefining what a piano-bass-drums trio can and should be. They’ve reached audiences of all demographic stripes with an uncompromising body of original music (plus some ingenious, genre-jumping covers) and dedicated touring around the globe. On their eighth studio album, Made Possible, bassist Reid Anderson, pianist Ethan Iverson and drummer David King take their distinctive musical M.O. to captivating new heights, proving once again that the rules of musical convention are made to be broken.

“This band contains some of the most punk energy I’ve ever seen or felt as a musician — it just doesn’t need to do it so obviously,” King says. “That’s our statement. It’s a complex emotion.” -[Excerpt | Press]-

Luciana Souza -][- BOOK OF CHET –Mp3– [Sunnyside Records, 2012] –

Something happens to me every time I hear Chet Baker sing. There is something he gets at with his interpretations – a quiet loneliness – that I crave in music. Chet is able to transport me to a place, and to keep me there for the duration of the song.

Through his singing I have become intimate with solitude. This record is an attempt to articulate the world that Chet’s music takes me to… Luciana Souza. Continue reading →

Kurt Elling -][- 1619 Broadway: Brill Building Project – [Concord Jazz, 2012] –

With 1619 Broadway The Brill Building Project, Kurt Elling honors the legendary location that the London Telegraph called “the most important generator of popular songs in the Western world.” Even for the ceaselessly inventive GRAMMY®-winning singer-lyricist, it s a hugely unexpected step, and one guaranteed to further solidify his reputation for bold innovation and superb craftsmanship. The 11-track collection features renditions of classic songs that came out of the Brill Building.

Some of the tunes on 1619 Broadway The Brill Building Project were actually written years after their composers had left the Brill entirely. For example, Elling explains, Carole King, like many other signatories to The Brill Sound, never had an actual office at the Brill. So it doesn t pay to be too didactic about any of this. The Brill is both a physical reality and a mental construct; and because of that, I felt comfortable casting a wide net. Continue reading →
